Question Please help me settle a debate

My husband and I have been having a 20-year debate. I'll give fictional towns, for personal reasons. It involves where I'm "from", not where I currently live.

I was born and raised in Medford. All my friends were from Medford. When I was 16, and a sophmore in high school, my family moved to Arlington, the next town over. I didn't want to change schools, and since it was only one bus away, I didn't transfer. I graduated from Medford High School, went to my boyfriend's prom there, and my own prom from Medford High.

I moved out of Arlington when I was 21, to another town. From that point on, I've lived in a various cities and towns. Whenever I meet someone new, and they ask where I'm from, I tell them Medford. My husband thinks I'm from Arlington, even though I never went to school there, never worked there, or made a single friend there. He thinks that since I lived there for my teen years, that's what counts. I think you're "from" wherever your heart is, your friend's were, your memories, etc.

Who's right?

I think that you're right, Janice. As that old saying goes, home is where the heart is. By the end of this year I hope to move to Pennsylvania, but I figure that I'll always tell people that I'm from Illinois.

I think you're right Janice. You're from where you belong, where you're heart is. And for you, that is Medford.

I think you and your husband need couples therapy.

Seriously, I think you're right in this arguement. If you spent more time of your life in Medford, then that counts more.

"I think you're "from" wherever your heart is, your friend's were, your memories, etc."

OR

"Wherever I lay my hat, that's my home"?

Where was your hat all that time?

I agree with everybody here.

I have a problem like this... I tell people I live in my hometown now (let's say Minneapolis). Hometown, meaning I was BORN and WENT TO SCHOOL right here. There is a town that is five minutes away from here (let's say St. Paul), and I was a RESIDENT there.

So... For the first part of my life, I lived in St. Paul, but went to school and did pretty much everything else in Minneapolis (shopping, dining, etc). All the friends I had were from Minneapolis. Basically, my social life was centered in Minneapolis. I rarely did anything social in St. Paul. Eventually, we moved away from St. Paul to live in Minneapolis.

When I was in grade school, I left the Minneapolis/St. Paul area to go to school in, let's say, Duluth. I ended up completing the rest of my schooling years and then graduating from HS in Duluth. This is when I lived in Minneapolis AND Duluth at the same time. (Confusing? Indeed.)

I spent about an approximately equal amount of years in all three towns. But when it comes down to it all, my heart is in Minneapolis. It's where I live and work now, after bouncing back and forth between the three towns while growing up.

By the way -- I am *NOT* a native Twin Cities resident. I just used Mpls/St. Paul for comparison, since the town I live in now is set up similarly to the Twin Cities area.

Total miscommuniction on my part. I had the old adage in my mind, "Home is where you lay your hat."

Of course, but it didn't sound as though you had enough time left over to LAY your hat anywhere!

You are right Janice, I will always be from where I lived all my life. I moved to a different burough in NYC, but I always felt that despite where I was currently living, I was always from where I was raised. I hope that made sense.

Cool. I lived in Malden and Newton, of that list. My husband's four kids were born and raised in Malden. My cousin lives in Sharon. Small world, Rich.
