Delta Burke Checks Into A Psychiatric Hospital - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Beloved TV star Delta Burke has checked into a psychiatric hospital in a desperate bid to conquer her obsessive-compulsive disorder and "hoarding" issues.

The 51-year-old actress - who is famed for her role in the comedy Designing Women in the late 1980s - admits she feared becoming one of those sad women who die under a pile of collected newspapers and bric-a-brack.

She tells TMZ.com, "I was on so many medications and they just weren't working and I knew I needed to get my meds worked out. I was on five (different medications). We were thinking the mania hadn't been properly diagnosed. I have severe depression. I knew I had general anxiety and I knew I had problems with obsessive compulsion and the hoarding, which I really want to work on."

"Have you seen those shows where they don't find the body for days? And they go in to clean up, and it's stacks of newspapers up to the ceiling? That's hoarding, and I hate it."

That's too bad that she struggles with those issues, but it's great she wants to and is getting help. I like her, I hope she gets better.

Delta Burke has not checked into a psychiatric facility, a rep for her husband, clarifying earlier reports, tells PEOPLE.

"Delta is in a clinic – not a psych ward – to adjust medication," said Henry Bollinger, the press rep for Burke's husband Gerald McRaney. "This is something she does one or twice a year."

He added that the former Designing Women star, 51 suffers from a "number of conditions" including depression, high blood pressure and diabetes.

On Wednesday, stories circulated that the actress had checked into a psychiatric hospital for obsessive-compulsive disorder and "hoarding." "The tabloids have blown it up as if she's landed in a mental institution," Bollinger said. "It's not true."

The rep said it's not clear how long Burke will remain at the facility. "Based on past experience, it's anywhere from three days to two weeks," he explained, adding that the drug-evaluation process is complex. "They eliminate everything and then monitor her as they reintroduce the same drugs or new drugs, then see how she responds."

Burke – best known for her role as Suzanne Sugarbaker on Designing Women – was most recently seen in the Hallmark Channel's Bridal Fever. She starred opposite McRaney (of Major Dad fame), her real-life husband of 18 years.

Maybe if they get her medication adjusted, it will help with the hoarding issues. I wish her the best.
