Default Baliff Number ... Three

I don't undertand the appeal of the third woman they hired as baliff. Her voice doesn't even show emotion!

I guess the appeal factor varies from person to person, but casting wise Marsha Warfield as Roz was a sound move as - out of all of Bull's partners - she actually looked like she could be a baliff. Seriously, if something happens she seemed more than capable of smashing some heads until things calmed down .

Selma was first, the skinny older woman. Then Flo.

Yes, the third's name is Roz.

yeah roz was actually intimidating and she was always threatening or laying the smack down.. this was after her role in DC CAB and before she had her own talk show.

The gruff, mean personality was just part of the uniform Roz wore at work (for proof, see the 24th general order of a bailiff). She was in actuality a very caring person, when not acting as a court bailiff. Cases in point:
  • The way she helped out the teenage gunman when she was sent to a sensitivity class
  • She is a bright, cheerful friendly person during the day
  • She thanked Dan very tenderly when he saved her life (during her insulin shock episode)
  • She is a romantic (went to Coney Island with her ex-husband, just for the memories)

I never minded Roz but I didn't really start watching the show until it was halfway through its original run, so she was the only bailiff I knew until NC was in syndication. I have to admit Roz's delivery was a bit flat. But if anything, Flo was the worst bailiff.

don't forget the show where she went to jail cuz she refused to take the gifts back from the kids... one of few shows in which dan showed how nice of a guy he really was too . btw, i usually post in the DIFF'RENT STROKES forum but since it's been off, i'll come over here now since i enjoyed this show as a kid and teen too..

Well, the OP is watching the show "fresh" so to speak, so he's not used to Marsha yet. I remember when she came on as well --- when I was a kid during the original run LOL. You'll notice how few lines she's given in her first 7 or 8 eps. Throwaways as she's walking off or something racey to shock the audience into laughing. Her first lengthy ep was when she and Dan were trapped in the elevator with the sumos. They allowed her to be tough, funny, and nurturing all in the same ep. By her second season they were writing her a two-parter about being in insulin shock, so it was apparent that the audience cared for her by then.

Yes, Selma and Flo could never physically handle defendants in real life. At some point they'd be broken in half. But bailiffs have other duties that mostly involve paperwork, so the writers were able to stretch in order to get a couple of funny older ladies into the cast.

Selma was good, but always seemed half-asleep; Flo was funnier and more energetic with her "HA-HA-HA" that she'd punctuate her lines with.

I liked Roz and Selma, but Roz especially since she didn't have a problem with pimpslapping anyone. I suppose I like her grim attitude because I have a rather grim attitude myself.

The scene with her smacking Dan and telling him to shut up was the high point!!!
