I know I have just seen it somewhere within the last couple of weeks, but now I can't find the airdate for a Honeymooners sketch! It's from the Sullivan Toast of the Town show and the sketch has to do with Ralph finding a note and assumes Alice is fooling around on him. As it turns out, Alice was meeting with Joe to discuss buying a ring for Ralph's birthday.
I've been going through some old VHS tapes transfering everything over to DVD and I came across this skit but I didn't have a performance date. Thanks in advance for the help! |

"Duh, Ben!!!" I keep saying to myself! Thanks, Bill! That was the place where I saw the information! I have "The Ring" but is the other Toast of the Town skit in circulation among collectors?

The counter (or time-code) strip was used on master recordings for the purposes of editing later on, if need be. Naturally, when the shows aired on TV we never saw it. It helped in locating certain segments of a particular show. SMPTE timecode is a set of cooperating standards to label individual frames of video or film with a timecode defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in the SMPTE 12M specification.
Timecodes are added to film, video or audio material, and have also been adapted to synchronize music. They provide a time reference for editing, synchronisation and identification. Timecode is a form of media metadata. The invention of timecode made modern videotape editing possible, and led eventually to the creation of non-linear editing systems. |

For some odd reason, I like watching the shows with the time code at the bottom! It's like the closed-caption ... when it's on, I find myself watching that more than the show itself!!!! (Strange, I know ... but I never claimed to be normal!!! Hahaha!)

My guess is that someone on a production company probably made a copy of all the shows when clips were being used for a special. (Maybe the 50th anniversary special, or the Inside TV Land show from a few years back, or the Gleason biography) It could be an inside job from the Museum, too, but I would guess it's more from someone inside of a production company who made copies for themselves, and then let them slip out. It's along the same line about how near-perfect sounding outtakes of The Beatles were able to get out of Abbey Road. One speculation is an engineer who was suppose to be cataloging all the tapes.

Exactly, they were probably masters used for putting together a special and some technician was able to make a copy. I have visited the Museum of TV and Radio many times and have never seen time codes on ANYTHING.

I think the Museum has prints of all of Gleason's shows, or the vast majority anyway. I have a program from the Museum's tribute to Gleason in 1987 or 1988, after he passed away, and it has a list of all the shows they were going to show. I haven't looked at it in a long time, but I remember seeing atleast one (and maybe more) of the '57 Trip to Europe shows being shown. (I remember others being shown including the entire show when Carney guest hosted while Gleason was out with his broken leg, and the Gleason show when Johnny Cash made his national television debut. THAT is one show that I would love to get my hands on, not just for myself but my best friend is a Johnny Cash fanatic!)

I don't remember seeing any of the '57 Europe shows listed in their computer.

I'll see if I can find that booklet today and if so, I'll post what I find about some of the shows. I know that many other non-Gleason show appearances were also shown.
