Default Any Further info on this case

Has there been any more developments on the Roy Caffey case. He was the police officer who was shot with his own gun 6 times and left for dead on a highway in 1972. Witnesses passing by saw him talking to 3 people he had pulled over before he was killed. I remember seeing an update that one of the killer's, a female, was caught in 1997, 25 years after the murder, and the 2 other accomplises had since died. They said more information on the case would be brought to us in a future broadcast, but for some reason, that never happened. I just want to know if there is any further info on this case and what was the fate of that last remaining killer.

I remember seeing this case a few years back but no further updates. I was amazed though glad that it was solved.

there doesn't appear to be any additional information on the net either.

STATE REPORT
State, The (Columbia, SC) - April 2, 1997
Author: From Staff and Wire Reports

Suspect in trooper's death faces new charge

* The woman belatedly charged in the 1972 death of a state trooper was arrested Monday night on a public drunkenness charge after a motorist nearly ran her over as she lay on the pavement of a rural road in Dorchester County. Betsy Kemmerlin, 40, of Santee, was picked up by the Highway Patrol about 9:45 p.m. along S.C. 15 near the town of Rosinville, authorities said.

Prosecutor Walter Bailey said Tuesday he plans to try to revoke the bond that allowed Kemmerlin to stay out of jail until her trial in the shooting death of trooper Roy Caffey 25 years ago.

Bailey had been trying to put Kemmerlin in jail since March 15, when he learned of allegations that she violated the conditions of her house arrest. "We received information that she was out of the house partying," Bailey said. A hearing is set for Monday in Orangeburg.

Kemmerlin, who was a teen-ager at the time of Caffey's death, was in the Dorchester County jail after Monday's arrest, Bailey said.

"She was lying drunk on the highway," the prosecutor said. "She claims that she had been hit by a car."

The location is about 15 miles from Kemmerlin's Santee home. Bailey said he doesn't know how she got there.

Who killed Unsolved Murders Old cases now solved years later Police continue to search for clues in unsolved mysteries
Herald-Journal (Spartanburg, SC) - March 28, 1999
Author: MURRAY GLENN, Herald-Journal

...

In February, SLED helped prosecute a woman in connection with the 1972 shooting death of a Highway Patrol trooper. Roy Caffey was killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 26 in Orangeburg County.

Betsy Kemmerlin of Orangeburg was convicted as an accessory even though police never found the murder weapon or getaway car.

"The key to it was her talking too much in the wrong circles," SLED spokesman Hugh Munn said. "It came back to haunt her."

No, dead by the side of the road, near his patrol car (in his patrol car?). The guy you're thinking about committed suicide, I believe, but of course the family contends otherwise. His car was found at a gas station nearby, at the pump I believe.

Were any reasons given for the killing? I take it they were going to be arrested that night or had drugs on them.

I never understood in this case why he didn't call for backup. Maybe because knew the family or felt that they were young and wouldn't dare hurt him - but I can't imagine they were too thrilled about being arrested, even if the sheriff is a family friend. I wish that he had at least called in their license plate # or given their names, or if the other officer had at least driven by and asked if he needed any help. 3 against one is crazy, even if you have a gun. Even if he didn't have a phone, he must have had a radio. Sad story. Maybe someone in law enforcement can explain why he made that choice.

A couple of newspaper articles regarding this case:

Also, Betsy Kemmerlin died in 2009:

This case touched me the most of all Unsolved Mystery segments. Myself being an only child, I couldn't imagine losing both of my parents by age 18. It seemed that Robert Caffey had a wonderful relationship with his father, much like I have with mine.

I remember being surprised by the update that they had found someone connected to this murder. I'm curious if law enforcement ever told Robert Caffey any of the details or clues that lead to the arrest of Kemmerlin.

So glad to hear this one was solved. Unsolved Mysteries never did follow up on the case like they said they would.

So, the people in the car were friends of the sheriff?
