Michael Jackson will make a surprise comeback at the Super Bowl this weekend in TV advertisements to promote the 25th anniversary of Thriller. The star is to be honored in a Pepsi commercial, based on the ghoulish Thriller video, which will air during the showdown game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants on Sunday.
The move is a marketing ploy to promote a special anniversary version of the album - and will be followed by a "major TV, radio, online and outdoor advertising campaign", reports the New York Post. Jackson is also rumored to be among the stars appearing at the Grammy Awards on February 10 alongside Akon, will.i.am and Fergie. |

can Michael try to make a comeback on present material, instead of trying to remind people he was great 25 years ago? It's all about revisiting Thriller instead of seeing what he has to offer in 2008

I just don't get the hoopla surrounding the Thriller reissue. Old albums from the 60's-90's are rereleased with superior sound and bonus materials every single week. I mean, Beck is releasing 2 disc special edition of Odelay just this week, but instead it's aimed to the diehards, and not a "remember how good I was in 1996?" type of promotion to get back fans who might've moved on.
Plus, I hate the desperate way he's hooking up with a lot of lame urban artists to try to be hip to todays market. I remember someone said it's great because he used to kiss the ass of a lot of white artists, but if you seriously think Akon and will.i.am have more talent than McCartney, Jagger and Mercury, I beg you to put down that rock you're smoking for your own good. He's trying too hard, even now that producers like Pharrell and Timbaland are working with more pop artists than ever before. |

I understand the Thriller deal, as I'm a big fan of that album; however, hanging on that does seem desperate. I think Michael is talented, and is capable of creating new music. I wouldn't mind some new MJ music.

I've actually heard two of the re-worked songs from Thriller. The first being "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" (which is doing pretty good in radio) and the other "The Girl Is Mine." The material actually seems quite fresh, basically, the originals only serve as "samples" in the new set. It's almost as if Thriller 25 is a completely new album.
I think it might be a hit. (or the singles at least) |

IMO, all he's doing with this is showing that he's out of creative ideas and all he has left is to stay in the past and update his oldies with rappers that 90% of the people who bought Thriller in the 1980's can give two craps about. I first had Thriller on vinyl in 1984 or so as a gift, I can care less about Akon or will.i.am and only like one of Fergie's hits. Totally different generations. It'd be like Led Zeppelin deciding that a special anniversary edition of Led Zeppelin IV with Fall Out Boy on Black Dog would be a good idea, it's not. Lots of people rerelease their older albums with bonus tracks, but none of them have decided to treat them as new albums. In ten years, these current mixes will be laughably dated while the originals will still hold up. |

^I don't think he's targeting the original audience that purchased Thriller back when it was released. The songs sound VERY contemporary... he's obviously going for the 14-25 crowd.

MJ is going to be either a hit or miss in most of his heydays in the 90s-00s. It was Blood On The Dancefloor that turned fans away because the album as a whole was bad. It was Invincible that many think MJ was trying to hard to recapture the Thriller & Off The Wall magic year, despite having a huge expensive video and a hit song.
It's either you liked him in the past or you disliked him in the present. There is really no yes or no answer. |

I hope the 2001 remaster doesn't go out of print, because I think the bonus tracks on there are more to the liking of those of us who grew up with a black male MJ than a few last ditch attempts at trying to be cool to an audience who doesn't even remember a time when Michael wasn't having scandal after scandal. BTW, if he's going to work with a younger star, why not work with Justin? That is the most logical choice. Justin has been groomed as the "new Michael Jackson" since his time in N'Sync. Plus, MJ's older fans are more aware of Justin than they are Akon and the sort since Justin is more of a celebrity. I think MJ and JT making a video together would be a big event, much moreso than Akon or will.i.am. Rihanna should also be on the album too, since Don't Stop The Music is essentially Wanna Be Startin' Something, or is she too familiar to pop fans who remember MJ looking human? lol |

Only one year ago... at the Super Bowl we saw one of the top 3 Super Bowl Halftime Shows! Prince an older artist got a shot to remind everyone why he was respected 25 years ago! Thats what the public wants, if your an older artist you have to come back with some AMAZING ((((Live)))) Performing!
Prince played flawless in a rain storm! His voice was perfect and didnt miss one note on the guitar even though rain was pelting him from every angle! The Police just had a HUGE COMEBACK! We saw them first at the Rocky Hall performing for the first time in 20 years. They sounded perfect!! Stings voice sounds flawless and the band was on point! Again ((((Live)))) I just saw them - Lead singer from Pink Floyd - Duran Duran all making comebacks at that Green Concert last summer all perfect, on point and of course 100% live. Now Michael Jackson, I wrote this on another topic, here we have a guy that in his prime, Lip Synced all his major tv appearances, he avoided singing with a broken foot?? .. at the Rock Hall when he was inducted, which is a place EVERYONE sings ((((LIVE)))). Michael pretended he had a broken foot and said "There will be no moonwalking tonight", one of his peers yelled from the audience "SING"!!! Look at what is set up for this Thriller 25. Nothing is planned for him to actually sing! Everything is anything you can think of that has nothing to do with Singing (((LIVE))) or even rehashing his dance moves from 20 years ago, because we all know he hasnt done anything original even in dancing since the mid 1990's. Just watch this promotion and wonder why this guy isn't singing live! Wonder also why this guy didnt perform with a live mic for any of his TV performances in his prime. Why? All smoke & mirrors. The proof is in the pudding and just watch ALL the Thriller 25 Promotion. Then think of all the other older acts and how they sing 100% live, play 100% live. |

I hate it when I see people call Prince a "poor mans Jacko" (someone said this on UKMix a week ago), when like you've stated contrasting the two, that Prince is far more professional than MJ as a performer. MJ weasiled out of performing at the Hall Of Fame because of a broken foot when Prince performed during a rainstorm. The only thing the two of them really have in common is that they are (or were in MJ's case lol) black men who really reached their apex in popularity during the Reagan administation and the glory days of MTV. Besides that, they're completely different and have totally different types of work ethics as performers and want totally different things. You'd never see Prince desecrate his classics to work with a hip artist. |
