The Joker, and therefore Ledger, was supposed to come back for the third ‘Batman’ film?– Yes, the character is in stencil for the third film. Ledger signed a two picture deal with Warner Bros.David Goyer (writer) wrote into the third film that The Joker somehow aids Batman in his search for that film's villain, Two-Face - whether that's from a jail cell, or the looney bin Fortunately for the filmmakers, it would only be a cameo by The Joker (either behind bars, or some kind of flashback) so they can work around that - I presume they'll either cut the character from the eventual script or simply re-cast (and have that person in the shadows).

Adrein Brody

If they ever have the Penguin, he should be played by Jason Alexander

Adrien Brody would be a good choice. I read somewhere that he was an early choice the play the part before Ledger was cast.

If the Joker is essential to the plot, then they will obviously have to recast the part.

Ledger post-mortem results inconclusive

Post-mortem results on Hollywood star Heath Ledger have proved inconclusive, US authorities have said.

A spokesman for the medical examiner's office said further tests are needed and could take around ten days.

The Oscar-nominated actor was found dead on Tuesday in his apartment in New York.

The police are treating his death as possibly drug-related and sleeping pills were found close to his body.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the Brokeback Mountain actor was suffering from pneumonia at the time of his death.

Ledger was discovered at 3.26pm local time by his housekeeper when she tried to wake him for his appointment to have a massage.

He was found face down at the foot of his bed and prescription pills were lying nearby.

In Australia, Ledger's father Kim spoke of his family's grief and said the actor's death was accidental.

"We, Heath's family can confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda," Mr Ledger said in Perth.

"He was a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving, unselfish individual who was extremely inspirational to many."

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the country had lost one of its top actors.

He said: "Heath Ledger's diverse and challenging roles will be remembered as some of the great performances by an Australian actor."

Fellow Australian star Nicole Kidman said it was a "terrible tragedy" and sent her condolences to Ledger's family while Mel Gibson, who played his vengeful father in The Patriot, said: "I had such great hope for him."

The star was reported last year to have broken up with his longtime companion, actress Michelle Williams, who played his wife in Brokeback Mountain and was the real-life mother of the actor's young daughter, Matilda.

Ms Williams is travelling back from Sweden to New York and her father said: "Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described someone as having died at a young age but burning the candles at both ends, and oh what a beautiful flame he made."

Ledger is currently starring in I'm Not There, one of several actors playing a role representing Bob Dylan, and had just finished playing The Joker in the next Batman film, The Dark Knight.

Ledger's other film credits included A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball and Ten Things I Hate About You.

Yeah he finished filming The Dark Knight.
"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus." Was his latest movie that he was filming in London.

well, considering the dark route Warner is aiming for, if they make another movie with the Joker, I doubt they'd use someone like Carell or Carrey (especially since he was in Batman Forever anyways). From what I heard, Heath's Joker was incredibly dark and evil compared to the Nicholson or Cesar Romero Jokers. As a method actor, Heath actually was having a hard time thinking about how vicious his character was in the movie.

the batman film was completed a few months ago and so there isn't going to be a need to find a replacement actor

I think Mikado was referring to the first post referring to the possible need for the Joker to return in the next Batman movie.

i wonder what would've happened in terms of the casting- had heath died whilst during the making of the batman film at the time. would've they have used a replacement?

yeah, i was thinking exactly the same thing a few months back. michael urie aka marc from abc's ugly betty (the guy in my avator) would've made an interesting joker. i can picture him with the make-up, the clothes. mind you, he would make a good and younger version of the riddler
