Bob Newhart Recalls Suzanne Pleshette - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

January 22, 2008 -- BOB Newhart says he will always remember Suzanne Pleshette for the way she could make him blush.

Pleshette played Newhart's wife for six years on "The Bob Newhart Show" and was there when Newhart woke up from his dream in the surprise series finale of "Newhart."

She died last weekend before she could get her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The ceremony was scheduled on her birthday, January 31.

Newhart said he and Pleshette had "mutual respect for each other and loved each other."

In real life, Pleshette was just like she was on TV, Newhart said - "except for the swearing."

He joked that he saw "grown Marines faint" when she'd let loose with a string of dirty words.

In the 50's we had Ricky and Lucy

In the 60's we had Rob and Laura Petrie

In the 70s we had Bob and Emily Hartley

In the 80s we had Steven and Elyse Keaton

In the 90s we had Hayden and Christine Fox

Bob and Emily made it look as though they were married to each other in real life. It was always a joy to watch Bob and Emily Hartley together especially in their bedroom scenes.

Yes, thanks for the article. I hadn't caught that one!

I also enjoyed the list of the married couples from the last 5 decades. I don't know who we have from this decade (I no longer watch primetime networks, preferring my DVDs and some of the more educational channels). But you picked out some good ones, and Bob and Emily Hartley were definitely the 70s couple!

Another couple from this decade I did enjoyed and their series debuted in the 90's and spilled over into this decade was Eric and Annie Camdem of 7th Heaven. Another couple I enjoyed was Van and Cheyenne Montgomery of Reba. The latter is a goofy couple who are so self absorbed but funny at the same time. I just got into watching Reba and it is a scream.

No I didn't. I preferred Rob and Laura because they brought more realism as a couple compared to Darrin and Samantha. Laura showed her flaws as well as Rob.

As much as I liked Samantha but she was a bit of a bore than in the last season she took an extreme turn and was having somewhat of a bad attitude.

Still my preference for that decade was Rob and Laura.

I read somewhere recently that when Tom Poston showed up to play the Peeper, Suzanne told Bob that she'd once "f***ed" their guest star. (Years back, way before the two wed, Suzanne and Tom had a fling - then went on to marry other people.) Bob said something along the lines of, "I really didn't need to know that."

My reaction probably would've been the same as Bob's.

Happily, Suzanne and Tom found each other again years later after their respective spouses had passed on - and were married until Tom's passing in the spring of 2007.
