With all due respect to Florence Stanley, I must say I much prefered Doris Belack in the role of Bernice Fish. Even though she only appeared in one episode (Season 2's "Fish", also the first appearance of Arthur Dietrich), I wish they'd kept her on. She was funny and really held her own opposite Abe Vigoda. What do the rest of you think?

I suppose I'm just more used to Florence Stanley as Berniece, because I'm having a hard time remembering the other actress. When I get the second season I'll be able to compare the two. From your discription, she sounds like a pretty strong character.

Florence Stanley's Bernice was always so whiny. Doris Belack's Bernice had much more of a backbone, yet she was still a nag.
You'll love the episode, Ann, I just know it.

Here are the two faces of Bernice Fish: Florence Stanley and Doris Belack.

From a little distance they really favor each other, don't they? Thanks for posting the pictures!

Sonny, you probably don't remember her because she was only in one episode. Florence Stanley must have not been available the week that show was taped.

I gotta go with Florence Stanley. Her voice was so distinctive. She seemed to fit the image of the person that Fish had created with his many comments about his marriage.

Florence Stanley was my idea of Bernice.
On a related note, I found an old episode of Mr. Belvedere and was surprised at the guest star -- Florence Stanley. She played a widow who "wins" Mr. Belvedere in a charity auction. Seemed strange to see her away from the 12th Precinct. LOL |

Doris Belack also played a judge on several episodes of Law & Order back in the '90s.
