'27 Dresses' a predictable, charming date flick

Television's most endearing doctor, Katherine Heigl, has made a serious move to displace Julia Roberts as America's cinema sweetheart.

The ability of the "Grey's Anatomy" star to play characters who are both strong and vulnerable, as in "Knocked Up," gives her a solid foundation to wrestle the crown from Roberts. But Julia gets to hold on to the title a little longer. Heigl's latest starring role, in "27 Dresses," isn't going to win her any prizes.

"27 Dresses" is a sweet, predictable romantic comedy that is at its best when Heigl's character is pushed to her social and emotional limits. Heigl plays Jane, a perpetual bridesmaid. She has been part of 27 weddings and has the ugly dresses stuffed in a closet to prove it.

When director Anne Fletcher ("Step Up") focuses on the frenzy of those weddings, the movie is at its comedic best. Just look at Heigl's face as she sheepishly holds up the long wedding gowns of brides when nature calls.

The opening moments of the film are a whirlwind of action as Jane bounces between two wedding parties. The running joke of how the taxi driver's fare drops when he sneaks peaks at Heigl changing clothes is an example of Aline Brosh McKenna's script at its best.

Like a drunken uncle at a wedding reception, a secondary plot involving Jane's hot, egocentric sister Tess (Malin Akerman) shows up to spoil the fun. This sets up an awkward story line about an obtuse love triangle that could have been handled with one conversation.

The film is much better when the utterly charming Kevin (James Marsden) arrives to write a story about the wedding between Tess and Jane's boss (Edward Burns). He decides the saga of Jane's multiple bridesmaid appearances is far more interesting.

No argument here.

"27 Dresses" turns into a screwball comedy when Heigl and Marsden are together. Their chemistry is explosive. But it gets buffered by the less interesting secondary story. There should have been more scenes of Jane's wedding obsessions and the romance between writer and subject.

While "27 Dresses" is not totally engaging, it does bring together the future sweetheart of the cinema with a safe comedy script. The result: a good date movie, but not worth a long-term commitment.
