"Soap" Ended On A Down Note - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Many years ago, I was talking with someone who also watched Soap. She made an interesting point to me: The series finale was very negative. Chester was about to kill Danny, who he'd just found out was his son because Danny was having an affair with his wife, Jessica was assasinated by a firing squad, Jodie was trapped by hypnosis in the guise of a Jewish man, Mary was drinking heavily and Burt was set up to be killed.

After thinking about it, I have to say she was right. I wonder why Soap had gotten so downbeat in its last season??

That's a good point. The only good thing about the final season (imo) was the addition of my honey Gregory Sierra!!!

Well, the whole series was a "down note", truthfully

....

But who knows what the writers had in store? It's my understanding that at the time the final episode of Season 4 was filmed, none of them knew the show wouldn't be returning for a 5th season. Not sure if this is true or not. If it is, it would explain why the series ended the way it did, with another wide open plot rather than a definite conclusion.

I read an interview with Susan Harris awhile back. She said if she'd known Soap was getting the ax, they would've resolved all the stories. Ms. Harris went on to say she would've never purposely left the audience hanging like that.

Times certainly have changed. Nowadays, tv shows are given some time to film endings to their shows or alternate endings...."just in case."

There were plans to do a movie to tie up all the loose ends but with Richard Mulligan gone I don't think it could be done now. And after so many years.

Not to mention Cathryn Damon, Roscoe Lee Browne, etc...
