Playing the Angel was definately their most consistant album since Violator IMO

^I agree. I like the entire vibe off Playing the Angel and it is very close to becoming my favorite Depeche Mode album. I guess the "newness" factor prevents it from becoming so--it has stand the test of time first. But I'm sure that in a few years many fans will consider in the top 3 cat. of DM albums.

I don't know if it'll be top 3 since Black Celebration/Music For The Masses/Violator are all so well-regarded as classics. But it definately is a much better album than (anything but) Exciter and Ultra were. Ultra was the bigger disappointment between those two to me since "Barrel Of A Gun" and "It's No Good" were back to back great singles and videos and then it turned out they were pretty much the only good tracks off that album.

I just think that a lot of their older work sounds so cheesy nowadays and because of that, Playing the Angel was so refreshing. Violator is the clear exception to 'cheese' factor

the early stuff was definately cheesy, but I never really heard of Black Celebration considered cheese, since that was their "goth" album and usually goth isn't considered dated and cheesy like Duran Duran type synth-pop.

I have the Violator CD but haven't listened to it in ages. I think I should listen to it again.

Violator is clearly their best work by far. In 1990, the band were instantly stars and the singles they did were so popular, MTV overplayed them. This is when Depeche Mode was Depeche Mode. This is my favorite album by them. This is when the band matured and opened the doors to newcomers of their work.

yep, I think Depeche kept getting better and better as the 80's progressed, and it apexed with Violator. Too bad after that album, Gahan got so screwed up on heroin that he actually died for a few minutes in 1996, at least he's been clean for about eleven years now (he cleaned up during Ultra and you can tell just from the differences between the Barrel Of A Gun video and the Home video from the same album, as different as night and day)

I've listened to Depeche Mode for a long time.

I actually have a cassette recorded from the radio when "Everything Counts" was the single at the time.

I saw the Black Celebration tour- had orchestra seats at Radio City Music Hall- pretty good show, not great.

But right around that time I was lucky- I saw Tears For Fears (Songs From the Big Chair Tour) and The Cure (The Head on the Door tour) also at Radio City Music Hall - both orchestra seats as well and they were both amazing shows.

I'm pretty much dating myself here.

Anyway, my favorite album of Depeche Mode was Some Great Reward, but now I think it's pretty close between that and Songs of Faith & Devotion.
Unlike a lot of folk, Violator is not my favorite.

Here is a stab at a top 10:

Leave In Silence
Everything Counts
Get The Balance Right
Something To Do
It Doesn't Matter
It Doensn't Matter Two
Policy of Truth
Condemnation
Walking in My Shoes
In Your Room
