Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne has reached a settlement in a lawsuit accusing her of plagiarizing her hit track Girlfriend.
The 23-year-old was sued by 1970s rock band the Rubinoos, who claimed her 2007 single sounded similar to their song I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend which was released in 1979. But the band's lawyer, Nicholas Carlin, has now announced a settlement has been reached, although the exact financial details have not been released. After being hit with the lawsuit, Lavigne insisted she had never heard the Rubinoos' track, but her manager Terry McBride insisted he would rather settle the matter out of court as a way of avoiding a costly legal battle. never liked Avril but I do believe she's innocent here. The song in question is an obscure song recorded before Avril was born. I heard a side-by-side comparison of the two songs and there wasn't very much similar there. However, I do believe Avril was guilty of the apparent plagerism of a Peaches song. Avril said in an interview that Peaches' album was one of her favorite albums so she knew the material.
