Default XM Satellite Radio

Does anybody know or care to speculate why XM Radio has music channels named Lucy, Fred and Ethel but they don't have a channel named Ricky?

I used to have XM. Now, I only get XM with AOL on my computer but I don't see those channels on there. I guess it is a limited version of XM. I now have Sirius instead. But when I had XM they never had channels named FRED, LUCY or ETHEL. What on earth? What do they play?

I seem to recall they had a very different SOUND. The Fred one had change jiggling, the Ethel one had the sound of munching and the Lucy one had this constant crying sound, high pitched too!

I have XM and I've wondered why there wasn't a Ricky channel either.

Irene, here's what those channels play:
Lucy = Grunge, '90s Alternative, Rock
Ethel = Alternative Music, Rock Music, New Rock, Garage Bands
Fred = New Wave, '80s Alternative, Post Punk, Retro Rock, Britain Pop Rock

This is kind of interesting:

Quote:

On June 10, 2005, CBS Broadcasting filed an opposition to XM's use of "Lucy" for one of it music channels, saying that it would be damaged by it. CBS is the owner of the "I Love Lucy" trademark.

It is CBS' belief that XM's use of "Lucy" would be confusing and mis-leading, would damage and dilute the goodwill of thier trademark, "give color of exclude statutory rights to Applicant (XM) in violation and derogation of Opposer's (CBS') prior and superior right", and would suggest a connection between CBS and XM.

It's a slow process to process. The timetable set forth to resolve the conflict is as follows:

August 3, 2005 Discovery to begin
January 30, 2006 Close of discovery
April 30, 2006 A 30 day testimony period for CBS to close
June 29, 2006 A 30 day testimony period for XM to close
August 13, 2006 A 15 day rebuttal to close

Apparently, all that is over with now. No other status is available. Presumably, the two parties are waiting for a ruling by the USPTO

I take back my original post.

I just checked the XM on AOL radio and sure enough, there they are! Wow, interesting.

Thanx Gidgetgrape for the information.

Thanks for posting this, it's the first I've heard about it. What's strange is I think CBS was an early investor in XM and their Infinity radio division programs some XM channels. XM and CBS even share the Opey and Anthony show. It's like suing your cousin for naming her daughter Lucy after you already have a daughter named Lucy.

If I were XM I'd add more ILL themed channels just to gnaw at CBS. Maybe a Little Ricky or a Mrs. Trumble channel!
