I wonder what the money was for. The community chest? Sounds like the writers got that idea from Monopoly.

The Community Chest was/were local funds collected primarily from businesses, but also individuals, to support community projects. It predated Monopoly, at least the patented version by Parker Brothers, and I'm not sure why there had to be more than one "Chance" card pile, but apparently the name Community Chest was just selected for its commonly known name. And today, I don't think it would go over well to market a game with United Way-- which for some time has largely replaced the Community Chest-- as a random chance card, which may be gain or loss.
