Default DreamGirls what was all the excitment,I don't see it?

Wacthing a little bit of Dreamgirls you know that movie with American Idol star Jennifer Hudson, She's not a really good actress, kind of reminds me the Show Girls that girl from Save By The Bell and we have not heard from her after she did that movie. But,DreamGirls what was all the hype about it?

Dreamgirls is much more effective on a big screen. I would not compare her with Elizabeth Berkeley tho. Jennifer won an Oscar, Berkeley won a Razzie.

Haven't seen it, sorry. I did see Sparkle (1976), with Irene Cara and Philip Michael Thomas, which is supposed to be somewhat similar to Dreamgirls. Has anyone else here seen it??

Never. Never even heard of it until you mentioned it to me here on the board sometime back.

Funny, Sparkle sounds eerily like Mariah's "Glitter"...

As for all the hype abt Dreamgirls, I can't answer that because I haven't seen the movie and don't intend to soon. I guess when it airs on television one night when there is nothing else on. I canceled my HBO so there went that opportunity.

Well, Sparkle was better than Glitter, but not by much. Here's some more info: http://imdb.com/title/tt0075249/

Yeah, I remember that link. You told me the movie is weird, crazy and all over the place. It jumped from one moment to another without making sense.

actually, I bet you're familiar with the soundtrack at least, which was performed by Aretha Franklin. That movie was where the song "Something He Can Feel" (which En Vogue also had a hit with) originated from. As for the movie, I've never seen it, but great soundtrack.

No, that was Aaron Loves Angela (1975), starring Irene Cara, Kevin Hooks (White Shadow), and Carl Dixon/Joe Kagan himself, Moses Gunn.

I never realized Irene Cara had such a career before "Fame", but alas... she did.

Ohhhh, ok, my bad. I guess I was confused since both movies star Irene Cara. Thanx.

I love Kevin Hooks. He was great in White Shadow. He produces/directs things now.

Irene Cara also appeared in What's Happening for one episode.

Neither did I. She did a great job in Fame. Listening to the music she did in that film as well as "Flashdance...What A Feeling", you would think that she would have had a more sucsessful career.

She won an Oscar for co-writing that song for Flashdance. I heard she is still writing songs.

Last I heard, Kevin Hooks was directing episodes of Lost. Yes, those two flicks were several years before Fame!! Just as Sparkle had a terrific soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield, ALA had a fantastic score by Jose Feliciano. I've tried to find those songs on several of his compilations but so far, no luck. I'll keep trying!!

apparently Irene got into a major lawsuit that pretty much blackballed her from the industry in the late 80's. I heard she only received $200 in royalties total from "Flashdance... What A Feelin'" and she sued and nobody wanted to work with her again. Kind of a shame, she kind of had a mini-Donna Summer (well, considering Moroder produced Fame, Flashdance and the What A Feelin' album from 83 which had several other hits as well, it was probably intended) feel that should've kept her on the charts for a bit longer.
