TDVDS In Color? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

There's a newspaper story that mentions how the producer of the DVD release of The Dick Van Dyke Show was positively blown away by the quality of the recent colorization of I Love Lucy.

I for one would absolutely welcome seeing The Dick Van Dyke Show in color. The computer technology now exists that would produce a quality product. We're not talking garishly loud color like in the sets for The Wizard of Oz. Even to have The Dick Van Dyke Show look like it was filmed in 1970 instead of 1966 would be a big plus. I think colorization would help introduce a whole new audience to the show that would otherwise never consider watching something filmed in black-and-white.

no; I don't think they should colorize it. I agree; the technology exists now to do it good, like you said, to make it look like it was filmed in 1970, instead of 1961-66. But, seeing those old shows in black and white gives them a certain nostalgic charm. (the cast of "THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW" didn't want them to start doing that in color in 1965; for the same reason)

While I wouldn't want the whole series released in color I think it would be kewl to see 1 episode in color.

yea, I wouldn't mind seeing 1 episode, or part of one in color; just not the whole series.

It's been a dream of mine to see this show in a quality color format for a long time. My first post on this subject goes back a few years. Forget 1970. With a proper budget, Pixar Inc can make this show look as if it were just filmed yesterday, down to the 5 o'clock shadow on Rob's face as he's coming home from work, while maintaining the cool colors and patterns that were popular in furniture, decor, and clothing in the 1960's. That to me would be fascinating!
But I also understand the purists among us who would rather not have that happen. I truly do. So how about a compromise?
The entire show (all 157 eps) gets colorized, using the latest technology, but the DVD's come with a "Play With Color On/Play With Color Off" button available to the viewer. Fair enough?

That would be cool Steve. I like how they released the first couple seasons of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. They are available in both b/w and color. I've got the colored episodes and they came out very well for both shows. I enjoyed seeing the colored pictures in the extras on the TDVDS dvd sets.

I think it'd be really neat to see the show colorized, to see what color everythng was... I love your idea, Steve.

It could be like the Commentary stuff they do, On (or) Off?

But for Bewitched and IDOJ, I'd rather have the B&W eps for the ones that WERE that color originally and then colored sets for the ones that were filmed colored. (I write that correctly? lol) It's just me.

But that is a cool idea about the on/off thing.

I love that idea, Steve! I've often wondered about the colors on some of Laura's outfits. As you know, I've always loved her clothes and I would love to see the colors! However, being a life-long devotee of TDVDS, I will always love the b/w episodes.

Anything that was originally filmed in black and white should remain black and white. That is how it's intended to be seen. In my opinion, "colorizing" black and white movies/TV shows is disrespectful towards the genre and is an act of vandalism.

I think there's a difference between colorizing old film noir movies and colorizing old tv episodes. Tv eps like the Dick Van Dyke Show were in B&W more for budgetary and/or network policy reasons. I don't think they were in B&W for any "artistic" reasons. So, I'd like to see TDVDS in color!

As I see it, there is no difference. Whether it's an old black and white movie or a black and white TV show, it should remain black and white. If it was filmed in black and white, that is how it's intended to be seen. If you want to see a color sitcom with Dick Van Dyke, try watching The NEW Dick Van Dyke Show, the series where he starred with Hope Lange. That was a mildly successful show, 3 seasons and 72 episodes.
