Movie Cloverfield!!!

So I finally saw a promo for the movie Cloverfield on TV last night! Of course, I've been hyped about this film since the summer, as the original trailer has been posted on YouTube since May! The exact plot line of the movie has been a closely guarded secret, but this much is known: The film centers around a group of five New Yorkers who happen to be attending a party the night unimaginable horror lays the city in ruins! The entire movie is told from the perspective of the character's phone and video cameras, giving the film a sort of Blair Witch vibe (even though I hated that movie!) Watching the trailer, you can also get a sense that this film is definitely a post-9/11 movie, with scenes of New Yorkers looking back in horror at catastrophe. It is produced by J. J. Abrams (Lost and Alias) and almost all of the pre-publicity for the film has been marketed via the Internet. If you haven't seen the trailer, you should definitely watch it over on You Tube:

I'v always been a fan of monster movies... finally, one worth getting excited about!

I saw another promo for Cloverfield last night, this one which asks the question "Who would you go back to save?" A very chilling and effective ad campaign! I can't believe no one else is interested in this movie!

***Minor spoilers ahead***

I saw Cloverfield last night and I have to say... it rocked. A truly terrifying monster movie told on a highly intimate level. The thrills were a mile a minute (after the first fifteen minutes of exposition and getting to know the central characters). Once the action started, however, it didn't let down until the final credits rolled. There were several jump-out-of-your seat moments, one taking place at the Brooklyn Bridge and the other in the subway tunnel! I got goosebumps just thinking about it! The monster itself is fairly undescribable. For certain, it's ugly and it's fighting mad. Mad about what is never explained, nor is any explanation given to where it came from. The only thing we know is what the characters know, which isn't much as they flee for their lives through the decimated streets of Manhattan. There is definitely a sense of deja vu at watching New York skyscrapers tumble to the ground, with ash and debris cascading through the concrete canyons. The home video camera conceit is a brilliant one in the hands of J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, bringing such a familiar immediacy to impending catastrophe. When a horde of people begin taking photographs of the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty after it is bowled down the street, it didn't strike me as odd at all. Thanks to YouTube and other Internet sources, documenting tragedy is practically a national pastime. Consequently, it doesn't seem out-of-the-question when one of the characters decides to document the unimaginable "because people will want to know how it all went down".

Cloverfield is a fast-moving hour and a half. If you are prone to motion sickness, take your Dramamine and sit near the back of the theatre, as the wobbly, hand-held camera can be more than a bit disconcerting. If you have been waiting for an American monster movie that would give good old Godzilla himself a run for the money, then you've found that ugly beast in Cloverfield (not to mention that ugly beast's scorpion-like and equally poisonous spawn!!!) Four out of five stars!

Mi.

Does anyone have a picture of the "beast" in this movie?
