Default Other types of grammar police

I was watching tv today and saw a guy saying the word "heck" and another person chimed in and said "dont cuss on tv" in a nonjoking tone. This reminds me of times in my life where people try to tell you what to say and what not to say. I went to school with this one girl, i could not stand her. One time i said "oh, i hate when this happens" and she came up to me and was like "dont hate! hate's a very strong word! its wrong to hate". Wow it took everything i had not to smack her across the face.

And then one time i dropped something and said "d*** it" which the "d" word isn't a bad word. Then someone was like WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE. i can't stand when people do that. I never cuss around children, and i dont even cuss that much to begin with. I just dont like people saying things like watch your language, because its a stupid phrase to say and its like you are trying to tell me what to do. Does anyone hate this also? Anyone in general thinking they can tell you what to say and what to do?

I do too, I've made nothing lower than a B in grammar and essay writing my whole life. In college i've made nothing lower than an A. Its just that i'm tired of people who think they can correct people if they have bad grammar. If you know how to speak correctly, that is great, but it doesn't give you the place to correct people, it's just rude.

You express yourself very well. Be thankful you weren't around Chit Chat in the old days with the Grammar Police. Certain members, who are not here anymore, would correct other's spelling, etc. That resulted in some members being afraid to post, for fear of ridicule. Not everyone has a fantastic command of the written word, English often isn't a person's first language, while others have learning issues. That's now against the rules, and one of my proudest contributions to this site, as I lobbied to have that rule put into place.

policing language is a little less petty than policing grammar. though anyone who is offended by words like "heck" needs to adjust to the real world.

Wow, it must have been pretty bad for you to have to make it against the rules I'm glad its against the rules here though, now if we can only get rid of the people who do it in person...lol

I know a person who is always criticizing the public school system saying how bad it is nowadays. Well, she is from the WWII generation(where everything was perfect) and her grammar and spelling is atrocious. I guess the public schools were terrible back in the good old days too!

But I agree. It is rude to correct someone unless it is your own kids.

funny how people back in the WWII time didn't live long, due to lack of knowledge about illnesses etc. Apparently our public schools now and and the past few decades are doing just fine, everyday it seems we are finding out more and more about illnesses, which is why the elderly (such as she) is living so damn long.
