Oh No Internet Access

Well, after telling nearly everyone that I would be suspending my Internet
service this month, it turns out that I won't. I called TruVista this morning,
and, unlike the dial-up service that I had before, with DSL (which is the
service they offer now) there is a contract involved and an early termination
fee of $200, if you suspend it within less than two years (I've only had it four
months).

I ran into a similar obstacle when I tried to cancel my home security system.
That contract requires an early termination fee of $400, if I cancel it
before October 2008.

So, my online service won't be interrupted after all. I'll just have to try to keep
up the monthly payments somehow, because I sure can't afford to pay $200.
Life can sure get complicated, huh?

No offense but it should also be a lesson on reading the fine print and investigating before investing.

Those fine print on a contract can really be a pain.

In my case, I didn't have much choice as TruVista is, I think, the only Internet
carrier in this area. DSL is supposed to be faster than dial-up, but--on my
computer, at least--I can't tell much difference. But I've had this computer
for more than six years, so maybe it is just slow.

You should notice a considerable difference between DSL and dialup. Dialup runs at a max of 56kbps while DSL can range from... well... much higher depending on how much you're paying for it. [Or if you have Rogers it'll just run slower than dialup and not work, but that's a different story]

Maybe you just don't visit graphic-intestive or flash-intestive websites. Try http://www.speedtest.net and post the results. If you aren't getting your promised speed [once again, be thankful you aren't with Rogers] then maybe you should talk to your ISP about it.

^ Err... yeah, off-topic. Contracts can sure be a pain.

I know all to well about little "cancellation fees". I say go to hell whoever made those up because usually if someone is freaking CANCELLING something it usually means they no longer can afford the bills much less a useless cancellation fee. Some people no longer have sympathy for each other these days.

Thanks, Janice. I'm trying to remain optimistic. My unemployment checks
will start in mid-January (sooner if I win my appeal hearing). If I can just make it through the next seven weeks or so, I think I'll be O.K.
