I have to go with Christopher Reeve, with George Reeves a close second.

Me, too. George Reeves embodied Superman (and Clark Kent) for a whole
generation. But then Christopher Reeve came along, in 1978, and he really
LOOKED LIKE Superman in the comic books. Comic book artist John Byrne
once said that he preferred Chris' Superman and George's Clark Kent; and I
am inclined to agree.

George Reeves to me is the Superman I grew up seeing. A close second and new appreciation goes to Kirk Alyn for being a good serious Superman. The old Superman serials are a real treat to see.

I haven't had a chance to see Kirk Alyn's portrayal but hope to someday.

I do highly recommend watching them they are very entertaining. You can compare it to the tv series and tell how far they came from the 40's to the 50's. In the serials when they show Superman jump out the window it switches to an animated Superman and when he lands you see Kirk Alyn, it's pretty cool.

I still haven't seen the Brandon Routh Superman movie. My brother-in-law owns the DVD, so maybe he'll let me borrow it sometime. I also would like to see the Donner cut of Superman II, which my brother-in-law also has. Maybe I should just make one big day of it!!

My all time favorite is Christopher Reeve- but I also like all the others. This question probably also depends somewhat on what generation you're from- as many people grew up with Kirk Alyn first, then others grew up with George Reeves- for me, I grew up with Christopher Reeve- and then others grew up with Dean Cain and still others will have grown up with Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill's portrayals. This doesn't mean that you can't appreciate other portrayals and might even like other ones better than the most recent version- but it does mean that many people have nostalgic attachments to "the Superman" of their youth.
And of course, technically these guys didn't play Superman exactly- but John Rockwell, John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher and Tom Welling have all played Superboy in live action on TV as well and I think they did a great job too.
In any form, I love Superman!
