I am not sure. I thought they did have a one bedroom apartment but in the episode "Roper's Niece" when Mr. Roper told Mrs. Roper to be quiet because his niece is still sleeping, they were in the living room. So maybe they did have a two bedroom apartment.

I've always wondered if Larry lives in a studio apartment. You never see or hear about another room, but his couch doesn't look like a fold-out. That time when Max kicked down his door looking for Jack, he just scanned the room (nowhere else) and decided he wasn't there. |

I always figured that the Ropers had a one-bedroom apartment, and that Karen was sleeping in the Ropers' bed in #3. It's been a long time since I watched the ep, but I always just assumed she was napping.
I actually hate that we never got to see the Ropers' kitchen, Larry's bedroom and kitchen, or Lana's apartment at all. |

While most indications show that the Ropers' apartment had just one bedroom, it's possible that the early episode Roper's Niece shows otherwise.
Repeating a post I made when I created this thread 4.5 years ago: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/...ad.php?t=83943 There is one scene that took place in the Roper's apartment in the episode Roper's Niece that I remember very well because it seemed rather ridiculous to me. In the scene, Jack and the girl are inside the Ropers apartment. I believe they were getting romantic when Mr. Roper entered the apartment and surprised them. At this point, the girl runs off and disappears into the lower left corner of the screen. I cannot tell for sure, but it appears as if though she opened a door and ran inside a room. Jack tries to run after her but is stopped by Mr. Roper. Did you ever see a small room in that corner of the apartment? I never did, so I think that was rather bad editing. It may have made more sense if the girl ran into the kitchen on the lower right corner of the screen. That scene may indicate that perhaps there was another bedroom in the lower left corner of the set that was never shown or referred to again. |

As a continuation of my last post above, I just found this informative site that provides a transcript of the episode Roper's Niece.
http://episodeguides.blogspot.com/20...ranscript.html According to the author, Karen the niece ran to her bedroom. So that indeed indicates that there was another bedroom in the Roper's apartment. Jack jumps off the chair. Throws the dress at Karen and runs for the door. Karen on the other hand catches her dress and makes her way to her bedroom. Here is a picture shortly before the above scene.

On the other hand, perhaps if there were more rooms in the apartment when the Ropers still occupied it, Bart subdivided the space, figuring his lonely brother wouldn't need more than two rooms, and the rest could be rented out at a profit! Nothing about the complex makes sense. There were at least seven apartments on the first floor; the Ropers occupied 101 and argued about the blonde in 105 or 107. The second floor had at least 2 other apartments, and there were at least 4 on the third floor (Larry was in 304). The early outdoor shots (as in episode 6) show an inner courtyard, built up on three sides, continued to opposite 201, with three floors in all; but by season 4 the side opposite 201 is across the street, and whoever lives there can see into the roomies' apartment to watch the girls dance. And I think Mrs. Murphy (with the parakeet) lived on the fourth floor. Ah yes, there are at least two different addresses and two different phone numbers given for the complex during the run. That's why it exists in TV land, I guess!

If there was an extra room in the Roper's apartment, that creates some plot holes once Furley moved in. As already indicated above, in the episode Ralph's Rival, why did Furley's friend sleep on the couch instead of the extra room?
Although in the episode Double Trouble, I suppose the extra room is where Furley's niece slept. About Larry's apartment, I suppose that was definitely a one bedroom apartment if not a studio as in Larry's Sister, Larry requested the trio to let his sister stay in their apartment as there wasn't room in his. Speaking of apartments, now I have a question: Was Leslie's apartment in The Charming Stranger the same as Arlene's apartment in Jack Takes Off? Both were season 8 episodes, and were those also the first times the interior of someone else's apartment other than Roper/Furley's, the Trio's, and Larry's apartment was shown? |
