Movie Humphrey Bogart Appreciation Thread

Born in 1899 in New York City, Humphrey Bogart intended to follow in his
father's footsteps and become a surgeon, but expulsion from college led him
to the U.S. Navy, It was there during World War I that he received the injury
to his upper lip that left him with his trademark lisp.

His many classic films include "High Sierra," "The Maltese Falcon," "Casablanca," "To Have and Have Not," "The Treasure of the Sierra
Madre," "The African Queen," "The Caine Mutiny," and "Key Largo." He won an
Academy Award for his performance as Charlie Allnut in "The African Queen."

Bogart died from cancer of the esophagus in 1957.

"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is my all-time favorite movie and Bogart my fave actor, strangely, his best work was mainly late in his career because WBs thought him to be more useful as a "face" than as a serious actor.....However, although he spent a large part of his career in "bit parts" or as the "2nd banana", he almost always "stole" the films he was in; "They drive by night" (A 1940 film about 2 trucking brothers who get involved in a murder) starring George Raft & Ida Lupino, being a good example: despite 3rd billing, Bogart steals the movie, totally......makes you wonder what took WB so long to realise just WHAT they had in Bogie!!

Movie

While filming "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," Humphrey Bogart had planned to enter his boat The Santana in the Trans-Pacific Race. But John
Huston talked Bogie into going to Mexico to film the picture. Huston promised
him he'd back in time for the race. The film turned out to be a classic, and
John Huston won an Oscar for the screenplay and directing; but Bogie lost the
race.

To me , The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is THE greatest film ever made, don't get me wrong, the "official" best film "Citizen Kane" is a fine film, but, it's set up more like a conglomeration of scenes in a life whereas TOTSM is a film comprising one amazing continuous psychological story of a mysterious treasure and its eventual poisoning of the minds of a small group of men; a much harder story to tell, and keep interesting to the viewer! (But, John Huston pulled it off beautifully!)
