A Canadian campaign group is calling for 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland to be dropped from promoting Ford cars following his conviction for driving under the influence (DUI).
The 40-year-old star is currently serving a 48-day sentence at the private Glendale City Jail in California after turning himself into Los Angeles police last Wednesday. Sutherland was handed the sentence after he was caught drink driving in September. And now advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) wants Ford Motor Company in Canada to pull all TV advertisements that are voiced by Sutherland because he needs to learn from his mistakes. Andrew Murie, chief executive of MADD Canada, says, "Ford Motor Company has a wonderful opportunity to send Mr. Sutherland a fairly strong message. There should never be an excuse, when you can afford your own driver or your own limousine, to ever get into this situation. It astounds me that Mr. Sutherland would ever put himself in this position." But the car manufacturer is refusing to bow directly to pressure from MADD Canada. In a statement released on Friday, the firm says: "While Ford of Canada currently has a contract with Kiefer Sutherland as the voice for some TV commercials, we are evaluating that position. Kiefer Sutherland is serving the sentence for his crime and we are glad it appears that he will attend education programs and receive therapy." Good call - he sure isn't helping their cause.

Give it a rest, MADD. Sutherland did the crime and is doing his time, and he doesn't answer to you. It's never enough for these groups. They want someone's blood all the time. If anyone says or does something wrong, they have to apologize 100 times, kiss the world's ass, go to a rehab, and usually end up losing their jobs in the end anyway.
MADD has been out of control for a while now. Like many grassroots groups (PETA, ACLU), they started out with great intentions and got terrific laws passed. MADD has become a meddling BIG BUSINESS with deep pockets. A quick google may enlighten some on MADD's agenda these days. http://www.talkleft.com/story/2003/01/12/376/46035 http://trzupek.wordpress.com/2007/11/21/its-a-mad-madd-world/ http://www.ridl.us/articles/ridlForMadd.html http://www.ridl.us/articles/out_of_control.html http://www.alcoholfacts.org/ReputationOfMADD.html http://www.360degrees.org/cgi-bin/discuss/discuss2.cgi?mode=AREA&area=MADD_is_out_of_control http://www.alcoholfacts.org/MADDtruth.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothers_Against_Drunk_Driving#Criticisms http://www.drunkard.com/issues/08_02/08_02_fighting_madd.htm http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/...plate=printart |
