TV Sit-Comics
This thread salutes comic books based on TV situation comedies. Over the
years, there has been a swarm of these--from I LOVE LUCY and THE HONEY- MOONERS in the '50s to HAPPY DAYS and WELCOME BACK, KOTTER in the ' '70s. Nearly all of them featured original stories, most had some pretty decent artwork and the most-prized of these had photo covers (usually in full color even when the shows were aired in black-&-white). I can remember, as a kid, going to the newsstand or drugstore and eagerly reaching for the latest issue of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER or THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES or any of a myriad of other titles. The number of different titles is amazing. In fact, it would be easier to list the sit-coms from the '50s and '60s that were NOT transferred to the comic page. (Surprisingly, one of the few that didn't get a comic-book adaptation was GILLIGAN'S ISLAND.) Feel free to share any of your memories of these TV momentos. My own huge comics collection contains at least one issue of each of the titles listed below. (Trivia note: cartoonist Henry Scarpelli is the father of actor Glenn Scarpelli of ONE DAY AT A TIME. The elder Scarpelli is now an artist for Archie Comics, and has been many years.) DC Comics: JACKIE GLEASON & THE HONEYMOONERS SGT. BILKO (a few have photo covers; Bob Oksner art) WELCOME BACK, KOTTER (Jack Sparling art) Marvel Comics: ALF (#1 is a photo cover; Dave Manak art) MAD DOG (based on Bob Newhart's TV character on the series BOB) SLEDGE HAMMER Dell/Gold Key/Whitman Comics (nearly all have photo covers): ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW (Henry Scarpelli art) BACHELOR FATHER BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (art by Jose Delbo and Henry Scarpelli) BEWITCHED (Henry Scarpelli art) BRADY BUNCH (Jose Delbo art) CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?
