Default Wedding/baby registering

I was talking with my fiance about this the other day, and i personally dont want to register for my wedding or if i have a kid. We both feel it's kinda rude, and kind of like making a list of what we think people should buy us. I'm not putting anyone down who has done this, but i was wondering if i'm the only person that feels this way about these registering things? What are the purpose of these?

I know someone like that. He didn't want to register for him and his wife's baby shower. He feels that gift giving is just that, giving a gift, not asking for one. I told him how it saves the couple from receiving two or three of the same thing, having to drive to the store and make an exchange, it just avoids the hassle.

Some people are particular abt their home decor (I am) and it wouldn't make sense to have people give you something that doesn't match, it isn't your taste, etc. However, gift cards do make a nice gift because it allows you to choose what you want, to spend the money any way you like in the store.

There are pros and cons to registries.

As long as the store(s) are not crazy expensive I think it's fine. We knew someone who registered at some top of line, super expensive place once and this wasn't even a place these people would be able to afford!
When my guy and I get married we probably won't register but when we have our first baby (only the first baby) I would. Only because baby stuff can get mighty pricey and it'd be nice not to have to buy all of it.

Yeah, i suppose its good for the reason that you won't have two of the same things. I dont think wedding registry is as bad as baby registry though, especially when you register every kid you have

It actually is also very helpful for your guests - they don't have to wrack their brains trying to figure out what you'll like, need or really want. I think as long as your register at a middle of the road place (not high-end) it's not insulting at all. I just hate it when someone registers at the most expensive stores (my husband's cousins have done this for their wedding). That IS rude.

Baby showers are different - you're only supposed to hold a shower for the first baby so really, you'll need anything and everything - no need to register.
