Question New Computer Suggestions?

My computer is crapping out, and I'm buying a new one (desktop). Can anyone suggest a good one? Please keep in mind that I'm not looking for lots of bells and whistles. I only use my computer to visit a few websites, e:mail and to type up the occasional letter, so I need a printer. I don't want a 50-inch monitor either. Just something middle of the road. I have high-speed Internet with Comcast, if that matters.

Gateway is out of the question. I've never encountered such rudeness until I had to deal with a couple of their techs recently. I'd also like to order it online. Any ideas are welcome and appreciated.

DON'T BUY DELL!!!!!!

I have a Compaq and I bought it at those club warehouse stores (Costco)...I have had it for over 4 years and only had to do the occasional "take it into the shop for cleaning" and just recently had the CD player/DVD burner replaced because my son jammed a CD in there. I am quite happy with it.

I know how you feel. That last computer of mine was on life support for 3 years. I got my current one for $50 at a used computer store and it hasn't given me trouble since the first week. I've already gotten my $50 worth.

Thanks Irene. I just got back from Circuit City, where we took your advice and bought a Compaq. It has a 19" flat monitor and a printer. It was on sale from $830 to $649, so it's quite a deal.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Hey, sounds like a great deal. With the store holiday sales and so forth, right now is the best time to buy. Hope it works great for you!

Thanks. My husband did a good job hooking it up. I love this monitor, but it's too bright. I'm going blind here, lol. I need to fix some settings.

<<<<< you need shades.

Wasn't your monitor before too dark? Now it's too bright? Oy vey. Get Lou to fix it please!

I have a flat screen too and it makes things so much better, not a bulky thing taking up so much room.

Dell desktops are fine - I've had mine 4 years and running - no problems with it. It IS approaching old age, though, so I hope to have a Macbook within the next year.

Compaq and Toshiba desktops/laptops, on the other hand... I've had WAY TOO MANY problems with them. Ugh. Good luck with your Compaq, Janice.

Thanks for the well wishes, Allison. Real sporting of you. Irene's had her Compaq four years and going strong, so I'm hoping for the best.

Good memory, Irene. My last monitor was too dark. I finally found the settings on this one.

Oh Good! You don't want to hurt your eyes in any way.

Just to let you know, my daughters have a Compaq as well and that was bought over 3 years ago. They replaced the one they had (can't remember what it was). Going great for them.
