Default Roberts brands showbiz "grotesque"

Friday, November 16 2007, 10:21 GMT
By Beth Hilton

Julia Roberts has described Hollywood's obsession with celebrity as "grotesque".

The actress said she would have steered clear of the entertainment industry if it had been as ruthless when she started her career in the late 1980s.

She said: "I think it's just grotesque. It's like a circus sideshow. I don't know why anybody would even want to go into show business these days, with all the different magazines and shows. It just wouldn't be worth it."

She claimed that today's teenage celebrities struggle to cope with the glare of publicity, saying: "It's too fast. Before, you could build a career over years and many movies. Now it's like you do one good movie and they throw a ton of money at you and a ton of attention at you."

The 40-year-old added: "You're being constructed outside of yourself before you even know who you are, and what you are, and how you want to do it, and why you want to do it."

I agree with her for the most part. She lucked in when she came out when she did. People were starting to get more tabloid-savvy in the late 80's/early 90's with people like Cher, Madonna, Roseanne and the sort, but it was nowhere as bad as it is now that Britney walking into a store becomes "news" on PerezHilton and TMZ. People have gotten too star-stalk friendly, and what is disgusting is that it's ten times worse today than it was when they killed Diana in 1997. Most people would think that what happened to Diana would've caused the stalkerazzi to tone it down, but instead the fact they killed Diana seems to make them even more eager now that they hope they can kill Lindsay and Britney.... they already killed Anna Nicole.

do you think she is only saying this because she isn't getting as many movie offers as she used to back in the late 80s and early 90s?

come on, Julia doesn't really care anymore. It's fun to laugh at and ridicule spoiled Hollywood celebrities, but Julia has purposely slowed down because she is putting motherhood ahead of her career. I think it's very respectable that she does that, she wants to be a good mom instead of hiring nannies to do all the work while she's making four films a year.

I love Julia, she's a great person and I believe she's still one of the most "real" people in Hollywood and never let superstardom get to her head.

as ever with your posts, this is yet another excellent point you've made here . you do have a case to argue in regards to the accuracy of this article
