Default Why was Valerie so popular back then?

I have heard on many sites and posts about how a lot of males had a crush on Valerie during One Day's run.

But I am a little curious:

Why was she incredibly popular and adored by so many young boys back then?

Just wondering.

I can't speak for the guys - but a lot of boys seem to have a thing for the sweet, innocent girl next door type, and that's what Val/Barbara was. I think that's the same appeal Danica McKellar (Winnie on The Wonder Years) had.

You hit it on the mark. That's exactly what it was. She was just like the girl next door. She was about my age ( okay 5 years older ) and I had a big crush on her. She just seemed so nice and it didn't hurt that she was very pretty too.

She was America's Sweetheart. All the guys wanted her and all the girls wanted to look or be like her.

and she really did grow up on that show. When it premiered she was more of a tomboy bouncing her basketball around and in a few short years she was hot.

I noticed your location of Paradise and figured it out.

BTW,

did you ever have any magazines articles, photos, posters, etc. of Valerie back in the day?

I had a lot of tv magazine s back then and they had some articles on her. I didn't have any posters though. I wish I would have kept some of them.

She had that wholesome All-American look about her. Plus she served as a role model for teens for her character, Barbara, to stay a virgin until she got married.

Yeah, I hate to sound cynical, but all this "girl next door" and "she remained a virgin till marriage" stuff sounds more like rationalizations...We dug her 'cause she was HOT!

LOL - exactly - she was cute as a button and especially non-threatening to young guys. I think especially shyer type guys liked her because she would probably be nice to them - nothing a bit snotty (like Marcia Brady). I've heard DJs on the radio on morning shows talk about her - lol - and that she was their "first sexual experience" (if ya know what I mean).

The interesting thing is that most girls liked her too. And probably for the same reasons - cute, but not really in a "competitive" way because she was so sweet with it. I was a bit surprised but thought it rocked when she married Eddie (who knew what troubles he'd have). I had always liked her and then thought "you go girl" when she hooked my big crush.
