"24" Falls Victim to Writer's Strike, Will Not Air this Season - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - As the writers strike entered its third day Wednesday with no end in sight, Fox said it would not air "24" this season.

The seventh season of the hit real-time series was scheduled to begin in January, but producers had completed only about one-third of its 24-episode order as of last week.

"24" started production late, and was affected by the recent wildfires. The show's star, Kiefer Sutherland, is also scheduled to do a stint in jail later this year in connection with a drunk-driving conviction.

The high-profile new drama "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," originally slated to run in tandem with "24," will now premiere on Sunday, January 13, and will air in "24's" Monday 9 p.m. slot, following "Prison Break" and the reality series "When Women Ruled the World."

"Women," about educated and independent women ruling over a group of unsuspecting men, is one of two reality series Fox is planning to launch midseason, along with "The Moment of Truth," a show featuring people being administered a lie detector test to be hosted by Mark L. Walberg.

With "House" running out of original episodes, "Hell's Kitchen" will land the plum post-"American Idol" Tuesday 9 p.m. slot beginning April 1.

Fox's midseason schedule also includes new scripted series "The Return of Jezebel James," "Unhitched," "New Amsterdam" and "Canterbury's Law."

I am not a fan but saw this as the newest post in the Current Dramas section.

How the hell do they know that the strike will last long enough to affect 24's season? I just don't get it. If they already have 8-10 episodes in the can (as most shows do right now), if the strike is over before Christmas (and how long do strikes generally last? a month or two tops), they can easily resume filming and be done in time

I'm not a fan either, but I'd have to say this is dumb on Fox's part. They should have just aired the episodes they had, even if the season did come up short with the strike. This is one of their shows that actually does pretty well for them without Idol. They should be airing.

No I agree with Fox. I am a fan and the show's purpose is to show a story through 24 hours. To do that you need 24 episodes. It's not the same as it would be with Lost who can easily air the rest of their episodes next season. The strike is not going to end any time soon. The two sides aren't even probably going to talk again until January.

24 has been hurt by a lot of delays. They only have 8 episodes filmed . They'd have to be able to film 16 more episodes.. The last writers strike lasted 5 months and it wasn't as hostile as this one is.

If they only aired 8 or 10 episodes this season, it would piss off a lot of fans, myself included. Fox really had no choice and I think they did the right thing. Like Sonny said, you need to have 24 episodes, otherwise it's just not the same. I can wait until the 2008-09 season to see a full season of 24 and I'm sure most fans can as well.

I wonder if this means FOX will go back to airing it in September...

I never even thought of that, but it might not be a bad idea. I'd prefer to see it uninterrupted starting in Jan. 2009, but that is a long time to wait for a new season so I wouldn't mind it too much if they decided to air it in September instead.
