Since Nick at Nite hasn't showed any re-runs, I'm going on memory here. But some of the funniest episodes I remember involve Granny. I remember her fighting an ape in one episode...I think it was an ape. There are other scenes where she is running fast while racing or chasing someone.
As many have commented, the best of Hillbillies were the early years. I still get a kick out of the time when they first moved into the mansion. When the doorbell rings, Jed and Granny wonder where the music is coming from and go about doing their business. The doorbell rings yet again, Jed by chance opens the door and wonders why when the music is playing someone is always at the door. That is classic! |

I loved the Giant Jackrabbit episode, it was during the early years. The Jackrabbit was actually a Kangaroo.

For me, Irene Ryan ("Granny") made that show. "The Giant Jackrabbit," as
has been noted here before, won the highest TV rating of any TV episode up to that point (44.0 % share). A hilarious showcase for Irene Ryan. She was sorely missed in the TV-movie "The Return of the Beverly Hillbillies." Imogene Coca (who played Granny's 104-year-old mother) was a fine comic but even she couldn't replace Irene Ryan (nor could Cloris Leachman in the dismal feature film remake). Among the many best scenes on the show were the scenes with Granny and Jethro. Another great Granny moment was the episode "The Big Chicken," involving an ostrich. Of course, her arguments with Cousin Pearl (Bea Benadaret) were always a highlight; as was her ongoing rivalry with Elverna Bradshaw (Elvia Allman). A great character actress, she toured with Bob Hope entertaining the troops in Berlin, in 1948 (and appeared on his popular radio program). She got her start in vaudeville (she had been performing since she was eleven years old). A trouper to the end, she was performing on stage in Bob Fosse's "Pippin," unaware that she was suffering from a brain tumor. She passed away on Apr. 26, 1973, at 71. |

I agree about Irene Ryan - she was great as Granny. I don't think anyone else could play that role quite like she did. She was a class act!

I think my favorite episode of Granny was when Mr. Drysdale had the flu. Jethro asked her if Mr. Drysdale had the Hong Kong strain. Granny replies "no, I don't think he strained his Hong Kong."
Granny then proceeds to say she's gonna make some more flu syrum (moonshine). Jed told her she had enough and she replied "there's a flu epidemic and I've got to arrest it." Jed replies "if the police get downwind of your mash cookin', there'll be more than an epidemic arrested." Granny says," They didn't bother Louis Pastuer when he was cookin' his syrum and now he's got his picture in the hospital." Jed tells her "you keep on and they's gonna have your's in the post office!" |

![]() My personal favorite Granny moment is when she breaks down the door to Mr. Drysadale's office. "Stand aside, Jed!" Then she plows right through the door (which I'm sure had to be plywood. )! That was in the color years - I'm not sure which season it aired. I don't even know the episode name.

I always liked when Granny would sing a silly tune such as.
Well, were gonna have doin for the folks next door I'll cook em up a possum and plenty vittles more Open a keg of cider and a little mountain dew And we'll all have ourselves a (Taps the toe off her boot to the floor) Hullabaloo. Or. Can she bake a Turkey brown billy boy billy boy Can she bake a Turkey brown for thanksgiving She can bake a Turkey brown quick as Jed shoots him down She's a young thing and cannot leave her mother. I love the silly dance she would do then Jed would hoof it. Charles |

Another good one is when Granny dresses up like Gladys (Earls wife). She has on a red dress & blonde wig.

I like the scene in the pilot where she says "Ah'd better go stomp out th' fire under th' mash" (her still) and turns to walk out the door. Jed says"Ain't ya forgettin' somethin'?" She says "Oh yea". and takes her shoes off. Then she says "Don't wanna ruin m' shoes".

On the episode of "THE E! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY" about "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES" that aired a few years ago, they showed an interview with her, where she was saying that they originally wanted someone to play Granny who was close to the characters age; but she told them if they hire someone like that; they'd better be prepared to not have them show up for work everyday!
