Default 12/8/80 Where were you when John Lennon was murdered?

Where were you the night when John Lennon was murdered on December 8th 1980? I was only a six-year old kid living in Miami and wasn't into the Beatles at the time until I was 14. Maybe it I was older, I would probably understand a bit more!

I found out when I opened the morning newspaper. The banner at the top
of the front page had John's picture and the words "The Dream Is Over."
What a shock.

I was about 15 months old - probably at home sleeping in my crib.

I was 4 years old and was asleep in bed. I might add though that the first song I ever remember hearing on the radio was "Woman".

Watching the Dolphins/Patriots game on Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell broke the news.

I was less than five months old. Weird that someone who was an infant at the time of his death was so affected by his music later in life. Sometimes it seems like he's not even dead.

I was 7 years away from being born. Seriously though, I've always loved the Beatles and John's death was very sad.

I just turned a year old a few days beforehand, so I was probably asleep in my crib (since it happened at night)

I was 15 years old. It was evening and I heard it on the news. I was devastated and in shock. I was so sad as I had just bought the Double Fantasy album. John Lennon was my fave Beatle. It was the first time I had ever cried for a famous person who had died. His song "Starting Over" was the hot single at that moment and it was sad to hear that song for the longest time without thinking of what had occurred. I can't help but think to that time when I hear that song. It was horrible and that bastard who took his life not only took away a genius, but took away someone's husband, lover, friend and most importantly someone's beloved father.

I was a month shy of twelve years old; I knew that there had been a group called the Beatles, but all I knew about them is that the Bee Gees (whose music I LOVED) had been occasionally compared to them. The first I heard of it was from my grade seven English teacher, an ancient, possibly past normal retirement age, nun, among the strictest and most conservative people I had known. And she was almost in tears as she told us the morning after that this Lennon person had died. I remember thinking "Lenin? What is she talking about?" I recall that some of the class seemed more depressed about it than others.

But for Christmas that year, I got two Beatles records, the red and blue compilations, and very quickly came up to speed on their music. Full awareness of Lennon's politics, etc., respect, admiration, whatever, came later.

I think, though, that celebrity worship then was not as strong as now, at least in Canada, or at least in my family. Although to call Lennon a celebrity is insufficient.
