November 4, 2007 -- Wilhelmina Slater never gives up.

In her endless struggle to take over Mode magazine on ABC's "Ugly Betty" the brittle fashionista has been rebuffed and foiled so often that you'd think she'd give up, resigned to remain a pretender to the throne.

"She's wily and she'll take a circuitous route to get where she wants to go," says Vanessa Williams, whose priceless portrayal of Willie is one of the pleasures of the ABC comedy, now in its second season.

Her tactic this time? Stop battling the squabbling children, Daniel (Eric Mabius) and Alexis (Rebecca Romijn), who run the magazine, and marry their father, Bradley, who runs the company, Meade Enterprises. With his ex-wife a convicted felon currently on the lam, he's certainly available. For the moment, Wilhelmina has no obstacles in her path. And she's about to pull off the wedding of the year, this Wednesday night.

Or is she?

Silvio Horta, creator and executive producer of "Ugly Betty" is charmingly circumspect on whether Wilhelmina pulls off her power play. We know she walks down the aisle, to the altar; we just don't know if she walks out of the church, arm-in-arm with her new husband, played by Alan Dale.

"As always, it's very difficult for Wilhelmina to get everything she wants," says Horta. "But she is going to get some of what she wants."

What she is going to get is deluxe. "Ugly Betty" pulled out the stops for this episode. The guest list includes fans of the show such as Victoria Beckham, who is enlisted as Willie's maid-of-honor when her daughter bows out, and designer Vera Wang, who did Willie's dress, an ivory charmeuse gown with a train and applique around the neckline.

"The first direction for the dress was really over the top," says Williams. "I tried on a taffeta dress that was more grand, but you have to be careful not to totally lose the character for the joke. What we settled on was elegant, and suitable for someone Wilhelmina's age and I felt great in it."

The dress also survived the long shoot. "I wore that dress for three weeks and it didn't wrinkle," Williams says. "That's why Vera Wang's the best."
