Hey Rich P, Do you agree that the George Jefferson from Season 1 was a Different - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Person? I mean the George Jefferson of season 2 and after was a completely different person from the one in season 1. I'm talking about when it came to

Voice
Walking
Attitude

I wish I can put my finger on why that George Jefferson from season 1 was on another level. Maybe I need to rewatch the season 1 DVD

I'm sorry Solomon, as much as I love the series, I don't have it Season by Season, so I can't really speak toward this particular question.

But I always watched the Jeffersons when it first came on TV and enjoyed it. Much more than I ever did Good Times. Many scenes and episodes from the Jeffersons are vivid in my mind. George did seem to evolve as a character though through the series, or at least we got to see more sides of him. What was intriguing about the character of George Jefferson was that he was complicated. Many episodes liked to portray him as an arrogant little pr*ck but in reality he was just as kind-hearted as Louise. I think he was just afraid to show it because he would be perceived as weak and others would take advantage of this. George displays fine acts of kindness on the show, they are not frequent but rather well chosen, for example:

(1) When he helps the pregnant teen gang member with her baby, even though she drops her gun and he could easily have taken advantage of the situation. That he choose to do this is even more admirable considering that the leader of the gang had stabbed him earlier.

(2) When he saves the klansmember from dying by giving him mouth to mouth resuscitation.

The Jeffersons, even though it was a sitcom comedy, was more sophisticated than Good Times and far more subtler. It made you think about human frailties and prejudice much more deeply. And on The Jeffersons, many characters were allowed to contribute and give flavor to the show--on Good Times it seemed that JJ was always pushed in the viewer's face--not a ploy I can really regard as subtle.

I thought he became more and more of a charicature of himself (As did Al Bundy, for instance) and by the 5th season, i'd lost interest in the show

I'd love to revisit Season One. You could pretty much show me any episode or season of The Jeffersons and I'd eat it up. It's just that I live in a studio apt and only have so much space. I know I saw Season One when it first came on TV--but its been a long time since then.

Yeah there were complaints that George was too snobbish in season 1. Example below

Louise: George since we are doing well financially that's no reason for us to look down on people

George: I;m not telling you to look down on nobody, i'm saying shift your angle and have them look up at you
