It's back to comedy for Patricia Heaton - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

In the two years since the end of her nine-year run on Everybody Loves Raymond, Patricia Heaton almost gave up hope of working in TV comedy again.

"There was a whole year or two where very few multiple-camera sitcoms were being picked up, and where I am right now in my life with my four children, I just can't work the long hours that are required by a single-camera show," Heaton says. "But I was in New York doing a play last winter and the script (for Back to You) came across my desk, and it was so good."

Back to You, Wednesdays on Fox, stars Heaton as Kelly Carr and Kelsey Grammer as Chuck Darling, a pair of local news anchors with a tenuous relationship.

"I love the relationship between Kelly and Chuck," Heaton says. "They're really at loggerheads a lot and fighting, but they're very similar, so I think there's an attraction there."

To prepare for the role, Heaton watched the movie Anchorman a couple of times and found YouTube to be a major source of inspiration.

"I did YouTube some different local anchors and just watched to sort of get the gist of what's going on outside of the national networks and how people look," Heaton says. "There's a certain way that anchors speak. There's a musicality to the way they do their (adopting her anchor tone) 'Top stories tonight.' There's just sort of inflections that they use and the way they nod their head to kind of punctuate a sentence."

Heaton was glad to land another comedy.

"Look, we all have stressful lives, and it's not like we're saving the world or curing cancer or doing brain surgery," she says, "but there is something to be said about giving people a half-hour of a little joy."
