There were many unique things about ILL that made it so special. One of the things I really get a kick out of is the fact that the extras (orchestra and others) had as good a time as we have watching. There are many times when others are laughing at Lucy just like us. It was brilliant of Desilu to keep it real and natural, rather than having everyone on the set ignoring what is going on and being stoic.

Which brings up a great point, that could be why Lucy was looking towards the crew in that Kurtz and Mertz dinner scene. Obviously the crew and the people on the set were so enthralled with the singing those two did that you forget you are watching a scene being filmed for a sitcom. I bet there are some great stories on the set of ILL that we are being deprived of.

You and me both.
I wish I wish I wish a lot of things. I wish there was a book that answered every single question we have abt ILL.

Well, we can really search the internet thoroughly. Putting ILL in the search engine will surely come up with over 10,000 links for sure.
Maybe doing a search on ILL books on the net. I have found some interesting things abt other subjects when I had the time to do a thorough search for something. I am sure there must be something out there, at least on the wardrobe for ILL.

Lots of fans have already done that, Neil at Lucy Lounge and Ken at Long Live Lucy and Lucy Lounge as well as Josh at LLL also, they make these great compilations of the best music from all her series. It's so cool to put that on and remember ever scene when you hear the first few bars of the music. Ever see babalu Music from Weird Al Yancovic? I just love that one and can play it all day, he even added a disco beat to some of the tunes. As for the clothes on the show, surely you've seen the Lucy Dolls book by Rick Carl, it was so nice to finally see those outfits in color, some of them not the way you always imagined them at all, i mean a BLUE top on that black lace dress? Never saw that one coming, LOL! Back to your original topic, was it because the orchestra and extras were not in there for the many rehearsals and they were seeing these great comedy bits for the first time and reacted the same way as we did at home, or did they PLAY UP the laughter knowing their reactions were being filmed? A bit of both maybe?

Even Desi had a good time at the filmings. In "The Ballet" you can hear his unmistakable laugh when Lucy gets a pie in her face.

People who don't understand that are missing the point. This show has so many layers of brilliance, innovation and quality that nothing will ever compare. Ever.
