Default The one and only time Lucy irritated me...

Well, it was more than one time, but this episode aired today and it shows a side of Lucy that I never cared for. In the REDECORATING episode abt the homeshow, Lucy and Ethel are trying to hang wallpaper. Lucy gets real irritated with Ethel and starts yelling at her. I know there is another episode where Lucy yells at Ethel but I can't figure it out right now. Anyways, those are the times I got irritated with Lucy, I didn't like that. I felt like it was so real, not acting.

I know what you mean. Ethel put up with so much from Lucy, and there were several times Lucy treated Ethel like crap. Ethel remained loyal, though. I can only remember a couple of times when Ethel stood up to Lucy or demanded she be considered as an equal. "Mertz and Kurtz" was one of them. The rest of the time Ethel eventually caved in to Lucy.

There was that selfish, inconsiderate, childish side to Lucy that I don't particularly like, but Ethel eventually came around and succumbed to Lucy's antics.

Let's face it. Lucy was a user. Ethel and Mrs. Trumbull were the ones most taken advantage of.

You are so right. Ethel getting her way in the Mertz and Kurtz episode shouldn't have even evolved like that. How many times did Ethel stick her neck out for Lucy, covered up for her, did outlandhish things for her, etc. and Lucy couldn't ONCE pretend to be a maid for her. Ethel never asked Lucy for anything up until that point.

Mrs. Trumbell probably felt used at times. I am sure she did what she did out of love, but eventually you feel like Lucy took advantage of the love Mrs. Trumbell had for Little Ricky. If the Mertzes were the godparents, why was Little Ricky dumped on Mrs. T. so much?

I think if I were Ethel I would have left. What was in it for her anyway?

Good question.

Being a best friend and not wanting to see Lucy get in trouble. Or helping out Lucy when she found herself in a corner. What else?

I feel the same way about this episode!
What got me was Lucy yelling at Ethel to be careful with the paper but then Lucy turned around and ruined Ethel's clothes and shoes with that paste *you know that ain't coming out!*

Thank you!!! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who felt that way. Geez, Lucy was worried abt not wasting the wallpaper, yet, she had no idea what she was doing, she dragged Ethel to help her and there she is yelling at her. And the whole, "Not this corner, THAT corner" comment irked me too. And you are right, Ethel had that paste all over her face and clothes and Lucy screamed back, "I'M SORRY, NOW LEAVE ME ALONE."

I wish I could remember what other episode Lucy yelled at her, it isn't the washing machine episode because they both went at it, it was a scene where Lucy again was being mean to Ethel for no reason.

Is that what you tell your best friend, Irene? "I've done so many nice things for you, why can't you at least once pretend to be my maid and serve me?"

Actually I tell her, "Please, please, all I ask is you go to the top of the Empire State building and pretend to be a martian."

I had a similar reaction when viewing that scene, but it looked so NATURAL and REAL, the way Lucy talks IS the way you talk to someone when you're tired and screwing up things, LOL! I agree also that Ethel's life would have been so boring without Lucy making it exciting, even in REAL life, people put up with Lucy's way of talking because they loved being with her. Things were never dull with her around, either as the real Lucy or the fictional one.

And also, if you recall, people HATED Viv's haughty ways in the next series, where she DID stand up to Lucy and demonstrated that she also could be selfish and demanding and not necessarily a a great friend, but remember that these actions were necessary for the comedy.

Oh yeah that whole corner deal lol! I thought Lucy was pointing to the corner Ethel ran to.. I know that's where I would have pasted the paper I felt kind of bad for Ethel.. not only did she not win the new furniture but now she was forced into helping Lucy put up nice, new wallpaper to go with it. Poor thing.
