Starring Tim Allen and Laurie Metcalf as Michael and Sara Fletcher, a long-time, happily married couple living with their beloved yet dysfunctional family in their Pennsylvania hometown. Michael Fletcher works as an orthodontist who loves his wife and kids, yet secretly unhappy with his career and wants to change careers as he approaches the big 5-0. His beloved wife, Sara Fletcher co-owns Travel Getaways with her slightly younger sister and best friend, Susan McBride (Marie Osmond). Michael and Sara have three beautiful daughters: the outspoken yet flaky 21-year-old Brandilyn Fletcher (Olivia Wilde), the bubbly yet dimwitted 20-year-old Brooke Fletcher (Amanda Seyfried), and the naive 17-year-old honor student Ashley Fletcher (Taylor Momsen). All three daughters, Brandilyn, Brooke, and Ashley live with their parents still. Sara's sister/best friend/business partner, Susan lives across town from the Fletcher home with her oft-flamboyant college-aged son, Jason McBride (Michael Urie), who's been openly out of the closet and completely comfortable with his sexuality for the past 2 years (yet came out to his parents when he was 14). Susan's ex-husband/Jason's dad left them six years ago (around the same time Jason came out to him and Susan), he and Susan's already rocky marriage officially shattered when Susan's ex didn't want to raise his son gay (as Susan warmly accepted it) was the straw that broke the camel's back. Susan has yet to date since her divorce in 2001, and since then, Susan and Jason's relationship are grew and the two are extremely close-knit. Also, Brandilyn's older steady boyfriend, Jon West (John Krasinski) often is by Brandi's side around the Fletcher home. Even though, Jon is six years older than her, they are just what each other needs and they are truly happy with each other.
