Without a doubt in my mind, one of the best pop bands to emerge in the past five years has been Scissor Sisters. While US based, they have never seen anywhere the popularity here as they have worldwide. There's a variety of reasons why: They're probably too flamboyant for the US audience, They're too much of a visual band in an era where MTV and VH1 doesn't play music anymore (all five members have their separate personalities and stage names), plus musically they are perhaps a little too glam and disco inspired to make a dent in this hip hop dominated culture. I hated them at first but realized they're an acquired taste and fell in love after the second album came out and went back and discovered the debut also.
So far they've released two albums and both albums have been fantastic and filled with a huge variety of tracks. Their self-titled debut was the biggest selling album of 2004 in the UK and I Don't Feel Like Dancin' (the lead off to last year's "Ta-Dah") went top 5 in pretty much every country in the free world outside of America. They're going to release a second DVD shortly that covers the Ta-Dah era much like "We Are Scissor Sisters... And So Are You" encapsulated the debut album era (all the videos plus a full concert and other goodies). They've worked with Elton John, Deborah Harry, David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd, who went on stage with them and did Comfortably Numb as a token of him liking what they did with the song) and Kylie Minogue and are rumored to work with Dolly Parton on her next album. Any other fans here? IMO, if you dislike what passes as "pop" in America and don't mind that three of the five members (the male lead singer, Jake Shears, the guitarist, Del Marquis, and bassist, Babydaddy) are openly gay, you should check it out since it's probably the best "Pop" music being made at the moment. They have a small but rabid American cult following but are genuine stars abroad. Laura I Don't Feel Like Dancin' Kiss You Off She's My Man Lights (their current single) |
