Default The series was a book

In the ninth season special feature "Breaking the Sitcom Mold" it is confirmed by Roseanne Barr that the entire series was in fact a book that her character was writing. There were originally three different endings for the series. First, Roseanne thought of making it all a dream but she reconsidered because she new this would be the last thing she would get to say on television. So, she wanted the meaning of the show to be deeper and multidimensional thus it is "that she was writing a book." Roseanne felt this would provide another layer for when people watched the entire series again and think "Oh, SHE (the character) wrote this." Roseanne says the only regret she has is not doing a 10th season when she was offered the chance.

After watching the interview, I never realized she was given a chance to do a tenth season. Honestly, I believe she should have taken the offer. With ratings already as low as they were, how much lower could they possible get? Then that makes me wonder if the series finale would have happened in season 10.

I loved the series finale, even I was one of the few who did. I thought it summed up the series greatly. Just the idea of making the entire series a book is so creative. But, that does make me wonder if the entire series was a book, just the last season, or seasons 3-9.

I thought it was Roseanne's choice anyway? To end it when it ended in season 9.
I cannot see it has being a book before hand though? where was this info from?

I actually thought ABC was planning on ending it with season 8, but Roseanne pushed to do a ninth season. So, when she said she was offered the chance to do a tenth season, I was surprised.

I can only season the ninth season being a book. That is the season that is totally unbelievable to me. But, if you remember, in the second season finale, she began to writer her book, which would make sense as seasons 3-9 being fictional.

I actually remember reading an article from the time that said something to the effect that Roseanne was offered a tenth season and she said "make me an offer I can't refuse" and they couldn't at the time so she ended it. Now, looking back she says she should have taken the offer when she had the chance for a tenth season!

Now way to a tenth season! The show was SO bad in the ninth that I shudder to think what they had in store for the tenth!

I know. I must have seen it over 10 times, and I still cry every time Roseanne starts reading her monologue. Such a great way to end the show. The rest of the finale was really missable, but there was no way you could miss those last 15 minutes.

I also got the impression that it was the last season more or less that was the book after Dan died.
