Oh No New Star Trek Beams Up Scotty And Sulu

Simon Pegg in 'Hot Fuzz'Simon Pegg and John Cho are joining the cast of Paramount's new "Star Trek" feature.

According to Variety, J.J. Abrams has cast Pegg as Young Scotty in his "Star Trek" reboot, a decision that is -- forgive the editorial aside -- rather awesome.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter says that "Harold & Kumar" star Cho will play Young Sulu.

Pegg, who also co-starred in the Abrams-directed "Mission: Impossible III," and Cho join Zachary Quinto as Young Spock, Zoe Saldana as Young Uhura and Anton Yelchin as Young Chekov. Eric Bana was also previously announced as the villainous Nero.

In addition, both trades are saying that the role as Young Kirk in the "Trek" origin story has been offered to Chris Pine ("Just My Luck"), though reports have speculated that scheduling conflicts may be holding that deal up.

As "Star Trek" fans know, Scotty is the engineer on the Enterprise, a character played by James Doohan in the original series and films. Sulu, meanwhile, was the Enterprise's helmsman and was played by George Takei.

The English-born Pegg is most familiar to American audiences from the films "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," which he also co-wrote. His credits include a wide variety of British TV shows, with "Spaced" probably being the most notable.

While awaiting the release of "Harold & Kumar 2," Cho will be seen on episodes of "Ugly Betty," "'Til Death" and "How I Met Your Mother."

I'm really hoping this re-tooling of the eternally popular franchise turns out to be good...

I agree. I watched Hot Fuzz 3 times since the DVD came out! It's great. And so is Pegg.

And like everyone else, I hope the film turns out to be good.

Is Zachary Quinto still cast as Mr. Spock?...If so, J.J. Should remove him!

Yes, he's still cast to be the young Spock. You don't like him?

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Lord of the Rings" veteran Karl Urban is strapping on a stethoscope to play Leonard "Bones" McCoy, the Starship's Enterprise's medical officer, in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" feature.

Chris Pine, meanwhile, closed his deal to star as the young Captain Kirk. He had been in talks to play Kirk as well as a role opposite George Clooney in Joe Carnahan's "White Jazz." The two movies overlapped, and Pine was forced to choose between them, opting to make the "Trek."

Abrams has been furiously casting "Trek," with John Cho (Sulu), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Eric Bana (the villainous Nero) joining the film last week.

Also on board are Zoe Saldana as the young Uhura, Anton Yelchin as the young Chekov and Zachary Quinto as the young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, also will be part of the film.

The Paramount Pictures project is expected to shoot from November to March.

Plot details are begin kept under wraps, but it is understood that the movie chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew.

The character of McCoy, originated by DeForest Kelley, didn't trust advanced technology and frequently sparred with Spock in debates of logic vs. emotion. Bones also was responsible for several of "Trek's" catchphases, including "He's dead, Jim" and "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a . . .," ending in a profession in which he had no training.

Urban, from New Zealand, played Eomer in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. His feature credits include "The Bourne Supremacy" and "Pathfinder."

I think Zachary Quinto is an excellent choice to play a young Spock. He even
looks like a young Leonard Nimoy. I've seen Nimoy in some pre-STAR TREK
roles on such shows as DRAGNET and THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (in which,
coincidentally, William Shatner also appeared in the same episode!). Nimoy
was a mere teenager on DRAGNET and played a juvenile delinquent.

It's not that I don't like him. He's ok. I just don't think he's right for the role of Spock. I guess we'll see what happens though.

Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy has me scratching my head. But Chris Pine seems like a good fit as Kirk.

I didn't know Matt Damon was out of the Kirk role though...

It just keeps getting worse!

I don't know about you, but I'm not so desperate to see another Trek that I would allow them to make a mockery of everything I hold dear! A parody is fine. There's been millions. But this is unacceptable.

I am not a Trekkie, but why not either wrap TNG series up with one more movie, or start with Deep Space 9 or Voyager movies, instead of going back to the beginning

I'd rather see a new crew, perhaps many years in the future. If done properly, audiences can grow to love them just as well as a series.

But judging from what I'd heard and seen, this production team doesn't know what they are doing.
