Post "Name calling"

It was hard for me to know what title to give this post without it being really long...

Anyway, just some observations as to what the Fab 4 call each other and themselves:

For instance, Fred calls Ricky "Rick" nearly all the time. I think he only said "Ricky" a couple of times.

Ethel calls Fred "Frederick" when she's pissed off at him. Once or twice she called him "Freddy," when she was trying to butter him up, though!

Lucy only calls herself "Lucille" when she uses her maiden name, McGillicuddy (usually on 'formal' occasions). I don't ever recall her identifying herself as "Lucille Ricardo," although she may have.

Every so often, Fred will call Ethel "Ethel Mae." Ethel uses this herself, with her maiden name of Potter, when she goes back to Albuquerque, and confirms this to Betty Ramsey, who grew up right near her.

Can anyone let me know if I'm right or wrong on this one: I seem to remember Ricky, when giving out his full (and might I add VERY long) name, he used "Ricardo" as his first name, and "Ricardo y de Acha" as his last name.

Ricky often calls Little Ricky "Pardner," which gets on my nerves sometimes.

And let's not leave out the fact that Lucy's mother always calls Ricky "Mickey," yet somehow manages to get "Little Ricky" correct.

AM I LEAVING ANYTHING OUT???

Good thread.

Ricky does mention his full name in the Anniversary episode in Hollywood. He is giving the person on the other end of the phone his full name. He said Ricardo as his first name. Which means, Richard in English. However, his last name is also Ricardo. Which tells us his name in English would be RICHARD RICHARD. or RICKY RICKY.

Lucy also mentioned Ricky's full name in the episode abt the tulips when they live in Connecticut. In this same scene, Ethel states Fred's full name as Frederick Holbert _______ Mertz. Can't remember that one name.

Ethel has had two different middle names mentioned. Ethel Mae Mertz (Potter) and the other, I can't recall at this moment.

Fred's full name was Frederick Hobart Edie Mertz. Ethel's full name was Ethel Louise Roberta Mae Potter.

I thought Ethel inserted "y de" into Fred's fullname just as a mimic of Lucy using Ricky's full name, the same as in adding 'the first," in order to get the same result [doing as asked]. And 'Ricky's' full name, of course, mimic's Desi's full name, Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y De Acha III.

And WR, why does it 'get on your nerves' for Ricky to call Little Ricky "pardner?" I thought that was quite common... but then I grew up in Texas.

Lucy also mentioned Ricky's full name in "Lucy Meets the Moustache" in a scene in the living room with Ethel. I can't remember what it was, but he had a different middle name. I think it was Alberto.

Post This reply is for all of you who responded

First I must say - you people are good! Great to see so much ILL knowledge floating around.

Madame X, Yes, I remember Ethel calling Fred by his full name, but not what it was (EDIE!!??!). I didn't know Ethel's full name at all - good to see it in print.

Irene, yeah, ya gotta love 'Ricardo Ricardo,' etc. etc.

Tdr, regarding Ricky calling his son ‘Pardner,’ it’s just my prejudice against parents calling their kids anything along the lines of ‘buddy’ or ‘pal’ – I don’t like when parents act like their child’s friend instead of their parent, that’s all. Just my opinion.

Novarick, I think Ricky had an Uncle Alberto (maybe the one they visited in Cuba?), so he’s probably named after him.

If pet names count, don't forget that Fred called Ethel "Honey Bunch" all the time.

He sure did, and it was usually when he was trying to butter her up or keep her from being so angry at him. He said that pet name to her when the girls were caught having rebuilt the barbecue pit. She was telling him (in an angry voice) how tired she was from having been up all night putting wet cement on bricks. "I'm gonna take you apart and put you back together again!" Fred responded with: "I only asked honey bunch."

Oh, you are SO right! That's my all-time favorite Ethel line - it's just as much the WAY she says it as it is WHAT she says. And I love the fact that Fred just backs right down! Too, too funny. The Barbecue is in my top 10 ffave episodes for sure.

(and tks for your earlier welcome. These boards are a trip!)

That one doesn't bother me too much but once or twice he called Little Ricky "old man." That one I never understood.

Lucy and Ethel sometimes call each other "honey" and there's at least one episode where Fred calls Lucy "honey" too...I always thought that was nice, in a sweet and friendly sort of way.
