I thought "Martha" was just a rare unseen character-- like Sarah, the telephone operator on Andy Griffith, it required the cheapest type of actor to play the part.

I am sure there was no SARA or Martha as the actors and actresses had to pretend there was someone on the other end as you never heard Marthas or Saras voices, at least not that I can remember.
