Thumbs up Going to NYC for the first time in early November

This was a complete shock to me but my awesome grandma actually managed to find 2 frequent flier mile seats on a plane to NYC in early November and she booked them for us!! We were talking about going next year, but I had no idea she'd do it now....

Anyway I'm beyond excited- I've been wanting to go to NY for years and now I finally am. I want to see a Conan taping and since we book this trip so short in advance I have to try for stand by tickets. Besides that we want to see the Statue of Liberty/Ellis island. Our plane arrives Sunday the 4th around 1pm and then we leave Wednesday the 7th at 11:20am (but obviously have to be at the airport like at 9 or so). So, yeah, not too much time.

What do you recommend we do besides the 2 previous things I mentioned. What are must sees? Also, we have to stay in Queens (or Flushing, techinically) because the only hotels left in Manhattan were over $500 bucks. I heard from ppl that we should focus most of our time on Manhattan to see all our sites. I know my grma said she'd like to walk around Brooklyn too. So, and advice would be great from natives or frequent NYC travellers. Thanks!

Flushing is in Queens, so you can just say Queens.

I went to New York City in March of 2006 and had a great time... Definitely see Times Square at night. It's a sight you definitely have to be there to see. Their sidewalks are so clean, they literally sparkle! I'm serious, lol. Also, try to at least cross the Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge to get into Brooklyn at night - the Manhattan skyline is absolutely breathtaking at night. I also recommend a visit to Ground Zero. I'm not sure what they have there now, because it is my understanding that when I was there in early 2006, they were just beginning to get started on construction of the Freedom Tower. If you do go to Ground Zero, go there in the daytime. I went at night and could barely see anything.

HAVE FUN!! I hope I'm able to return to NYC for another visit soon enough.

You should go to the "Today Show" Get there early so you will be on camera. If you do go, do or wear something that will make you stand out. My mom was with me so she knew how to draw people which is why Al Roker interviewed us. If you don't go see the statue at least hop on the Staten Island Ferry. It is a free boat ride on the water and you will see a distant view of the statue.

Go to Central Park. It is beautiful this time of year. You might also see some movies being filmed live. Drew Carey's "Power of Ten" in Queens (in the same building that "Sesame Street" is filmed) could possibly still be production if you like game shows. They are filming "The Apprentice until Mid November". I am on one of the production assistants for this season's show. It is fun.

I am not sure if Central Park's Wolloman Rink is open yet or Rockefeller Rink either. They could be by Nov 7th. Do some homework and check it out.

I hope that you do have fun. I moved back to New York from Florida just recently and love it. No regrets. The subways in Queens can get you into Manhattan in a fair amount of time if you choose to utilize them. I hope that you have fun here in the Big Apple!

thanks for all the tips everyone! I will definitely go check out central park for sure. Also, besides seeing movies being filmed my favorite TV show "Law and Order: SVU" is filmed in the NY area, so maybe I'll be lucky enough to see that being filmed or some of the actors. Or to me just to spot ANY celebrity would be pretty cool, being a poor deprived young woman from Wisconsin.

I forgot that USA was filming "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" right around the corner from my apartment two weeks ago. "Gossip Girl" was being filmed about 3 miles up the street too.

Dress warm. The temperature dropped today and we are going to be facing some cold weather now.

I forgot one more thing. If you are an ABC daytime fan, check out "Starbucks Coffee" on West 66th st near the ABC studio. Many soap opera stars frequent the coffee shop on their breaks or before they go into work.

If I saw a soap star I wouldn't know it was them. I don't watch soaps at all so I couldn't even name ONE current soap star.

Oh, yeah, trust me, I know to dress warm! After all I'm coming from WI so I'm used to the weather changing!

If you want to fake knowing soapstars, just bring up the topic about how great Susan Lucci looks for 61 years old or how she has been on "All My Children" from the day it started. LOL.

Have fun. It really is great. We had been getting some ridiculously hot weather here but the tables are turned. Get maps for the subway or just go on line.
