Red face If My boss finds out what i did, could I get into trouble?

We were closing the store, and I had to put back things that a customer didn't want anymore. I put one of them in my pocket because I forgot to put it away, around the time our assistant manager said that we had to go home(it was past our punch out time), and I realized I didn't see the thing anymore. I told the AM that I didn't see it, and he said, 'Don't worry about it. Leave it alone. We have to go home." We punched out, left, and when i got to the bus stop, I put my hand in my pocket to look at my cellphone, and I saw the thing! UH-oh! I had walked out with the store's product! EEK! The next day, I was walking around, trying to be inconspicious, when a co-worker noticed that I was walking around the store. I had been trying to sneak the item back onto the shelves. She asked, "What are you doing? Why are you just walking around the store? I nervously and unconvincingly said, 'I am just walking arounbd for fun." She didn't believe me for a second, and I confessed what happened and she told me she would put it way for me. I gave it to her, and went on with my job. Could I get into trouble if she tells the boss what happened?

You should have told your boss immediately what occurred. You still have time to let him/her know. This way your mind is clear and your boss HEARS IT FROM YOU what happened.

I agree, and as long as you haven't been a problem before, a good boss will understand. I think it will look more suspicious but maybe still not get you into too much trouble if the co-worker tells your boss, but it may get you a pair of watchful eyes on you for awhile. I'd go tell your boss first chance you get and phrase it as you just wanted her/him to know the mistake and what happened; he/she might tell you it's not the first time it's happened and not to worry about it. But going to your boss immediately and even admitting you didn't know what to do at first shows leadership and responsibility. Do that.

I think it depends on the type of store you work in. If it's a chain and it has certain policies that it has to follow then I would just keep my mouth closed and hope the person who put it back for you keeps hers closed too. After all you did return it. If it's a small family owned store then I wouldn't worry since your boss would probably understand.

Sometimes a "good boss" has to follow the rules set up by the company or he gets in trouble. Especially the big chain stores with unions and such. That's why I said what I did.

you should have just walked in, put the item back and if anyone asked just tell them your story.

Once again, I agree, and once you've told even one person, you're safest move is to make sure your boss hears it from you. That way if she/he hears it from anyone else, you've already put it in front of him/her. And it clears it out of your mind and conscience too. Just handle things. That's what I know, and I appreciate it when anyone in my staff of 18 comes to me when honest mistakes like this happen. It really shows me who can handle situations responsibly and who isn't ready for responsibility yet. The fact that you're worried about it at all shows you know it could be an issue and maybe should be handled in some way.

It ALWAYS pays to be honest and upfront with your superiors.

I would have thought that the boss would have understood if you told them up front. I hope that all pans out well for you.

I told my boss what happened, and she was very understanding and calm about it. She said since it was an honest mistake, I'm off the hook.
