Chicago: Your Top 10
About six months ago I made a thread asking which version of the band that people perferred, the big brass version of the 1970's or the soft rock/adult contemporary version of the 1980's. In that thread I listed my top ten favorite Chicago songs, but I thought I would make an official thread for anyone who wants to pick thier top ten favorites. The two versions of the band tend to attract different sort of listeners. My sister for example likes the music they made in the 80's but hates what they made in the 70's (she says that the song "Make Me Smile" is like nails in a chalkboard
). Irene here at SO has stated that she likes their 70's music but has compared there 80's music to Hallmark greeting cards. So, it will be interesting to see which songs people pick. Mine: 1. If You Leave Now (1976) 2. Hard Habit To Break (1984) 3. 25 Or 6 To 4 (1970) 4. Beginnings (1969) 5. You're The Inspiration (1984) 6. Saturday In the Park (1972) 7. I've Been Searchin' So Long (1974) 8. Feelin' Stronger Everyday (1973) 9. Hard To Say I'm Sorry (1982) 10. No Tell Lover (1978) As you can see, my picks are from both eras of the band. |

1)Stay the Night
2)Hard to Say I'm Sorry 3)Hard Habit to Break/Get Away(and it really bugs me when radio stations will play Hard Habit then end the song before getting to Get Away!) 4)Love Me Tomorrow 5)Questions 67 and 68 6)Feelin' Stronger Every Day 7)25 or 6 to 4 8)Just You 'n' Me 9)Along Comes a Woman 10)I've Been Searchin' for So Long 11)Wishing You Were Here(I remember this song sounding real eerie when I was a kid) 12)If You Leave Me Now And again, going over 10!! |

I understand the hate for post-Cetera Chicago, they should've split up then because with Kath dead and Cetera gone, it wasn't the same band and there was no point to keep "Chicago" going besides $$$$, but the two David Foster produced albums in the early 80's kicked ass!! Stay The Night rocked harder than anything they did before, and certainlly more than anything after.
Fave songs: If You Leave Me Now Hard Habit To Break Stay The Night Hard To Say I'm Sorry/Get Away Wishing You Were Here I'm A Man No Tell Lover Feelin' Stronger Every Day Doesn't Anyone Really Know What Time It Is Street Player 6 from 1969-1979, 4 from 1982-1984 |

Chicago has been pretty much just an oldies band since 1990. I actually like their 1988 album Chicago 19 with "Look Away", "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love", "We Can Last Forever" and "What Kind of Man Would I Be". After that though, I think they became nothing more than an oldies act releasing a new greatest hits album every few years. Over the last decade, the band has issued four greatest hits albums all of which have pretty much the exact same songs on them. The 1997 album The Heart of Chicago 1967-1997 did have two new songs on it that were pretty good though. Also, not counting the horn section, keyboardist and singer Robert Lamm is the only original memeber. |

In no particular order:
Colour My World Hard Habit to Break Hard to Say I'm Sorry/Get Away Saturday in the Park Will You Still Love Me? Love Me Tomorrow Prima Donna Stay the Night You're The Inspiration Baby What A Big Surprise Colour My World, in particular, makes me want to cry when I hear it. I believe Terry Kath sang the lead vocal on that song. Such a shame what happened to him - I wonder how things would've turned out in the band had he lived. I also loved Peter Cetera's solo hit Glory of Love, and the duets with Amy Grant and Cher. I guess my tastes lean towards the 1980s era, but then again, that stuff was popular when I was a kid. So I kind of have a soft spot for those songs. I wasn't born yet when they had their 1970s hits.
