The UNSPEAKABLE JOKE Part 1 - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Prolouge: This Facts Of Life Story is set in the 1983-1984 season.

Scene1

It is late afternoon on a Friday. Tootie and Natalie are working their shift at Edna's Edibles. Blair, Jo, Mrs. Garret, and Blair's Cousin Geri are all out shopping at the mall. Tootie and Natalie are taking turns with one of them in the kitchen baking goodies and the other one at the counter waiting on constomers. Tootie is at the counter when two girls come in, they look to be about twelve or thirteen years old. One of them is limping Tootie notices. "I want to buy a cookie" The Limpless girl says, "and I want to buy a croissant" says The girl who is limping. "That'll be $1.00 each"Tootie informs them. "Have a nice day"She says. "You too" They echo back at her. The girls sit down at one of the tables. Tootie goes into the kitchen and Natalie comes out to the counter.

The two girls are sitting at the table talking and laughing. "Jenna" One girl asks the other,"Do you want to hear a joke?" "Ok"Jenna answers. The girl proceeds to tell her friend a joke that Natalie considers absolutely UNSPEAKABLE, unless it is uttered by Geri who has the joke in her act or at least by someone like her! The girl is giggling so uncontrollably that she barely manages to get the words out. Natalie is enraged that this girl is making fun of people with Cerebral Palsy using Geri's joke. She storms over to the table and states that "People who don't have Cerebral Palsy shouldn't make fun of people who do!"..."But she does have C.P., her friend Jenna defends her. "I can speak for myself and yes I do have Cerebral Palsy" The girl collaberates her friend's statement. Jenna looks exasperated at being chastised for comming to her friend's defense. "If you have C.P. then how come you talk like me and how come your head isn't moving around?"Natalie is incredulous. "You think "I'm lying about having a disability" The girl is livid that her honesty about something as personal as this is being questioned! "I can't believe you think a person would do something like that FATSO" The girl retorts! Natalie is visibly shaken. "Get out of this shop and don't come back kid" She yells! As the girls are leaving Natalie sees the kid does walk with a limp but at this point she is to Angry to care.

Scene 2

It is later that same night. Mrs Garret, the girls, and Geri are all sitting in the living room. Natalie after her emotions have colled is starting to feel just a little bit guilty as she explains her role in the afternoon's confrontation to them. "I feel awful but how was I supposed to know she had a disability? She was sitting down. I thought she was making fun of you Geri." Natalie makes excuses for her behavior. "You thought she was making fun of Geri with Geri's own joke. I can understand you being angry about that but given the fact that both her friend and she said she had C.P. you should have believed them"Tootie reasons. "I thought maybe both her friend and her were just trying to get her out of being yelled at for being jerk. She wasn't like Geri except when she walked; I didn't see that until it was too late" Natalie rationalizes. "Natalie I appreciate you trying to stand up for me but not everyone has the same kind of Cerebral Palsy I do. There are different ways C.P. can affect people in their bodies and minds" Geri explains. "Everybody's missing the point this girl called Natalie fat! I'd like to pulverize her! Who cares about her C.P.?" Jo snarls! "I'm against pulverization but I do agree that no amount of disability can excuse what she said" Geri replies. Blair jumps into the coversation."I remember when I was six and you were twelve Geri, we had a big fight about something I don't know what, and you called me BLAIR THE MARE. You knew I hated that nickname but you did it just to annoy me because of course a female horse can never hold a candle to the beauty of a Warner woman" Blair declares with a hint of destain in her voice! "Anyway" She continues her story. "I said that at least a horse has four legs that work and you don't even have two! I crossed the line when I said that. We both got in trouble however, because we were both wrong. I think that's the way it is with Natalie and this girl."

"I know I was wrong too" Natalie confesses, but that doesn't make me hurt any less when I think of her calling me fat. I like to eat food when I'm stressed out becase then I don't have to think about the thing that's bothering me quite as much. I like to eat food when I'm bored because it makes my life intersting for the moment I like to eat food when I'm happy because good food makes me happier, but her calling me fat was unfair because she's not perfect either" Natalie argues her point! "I agree there are better less painful ways for people to talk about their anger" Mrs. Garret voices her view on the situation. "I just want to go to bed" Natalie says wearily. The serious part of the coversation has now ended, the mischief however, is just begginning.

"Blair The Mare, I'll have to remember that one" Jo teases Blair as Jo starts to go up to bed. "Blair's my mare not yours" Geri takes mock offense! "MARE" Blair roars! She chases Geri and Jo up the stairs.
