A GREAT LACK OF COMMUNCATION

(FRIDAY AFTERNOON AFTER SCHOOL)

IN THE SHOP……
(Natalie and Tootie are cleaning down the counters and Jo is helping a coustomer)

Blair: (on the phone) Oh Chase you say the sweetest things…(she smiles) … I can’t….. No I can’t (starts to laugh a little bit) (pauses for a moment) …. oh ok (she makes kissing sounds into the phone) mmmmm kissy kissy…. See ya night (she hangs up the phone and turns to Natalie and Tootie)

Natalie/tootie: (standing over near the counter making fun of Blair) kissy kissy mmmmm

Blair: (gets angry and walks towards them) will you two grow up none of you (Jo enters the room carrying her books) have any idea what it’s like to be in a relationship with a real man like I do

Jo: (looks at Blair and smiles) ain’t that the truth (pauses for a moment) now David he’s a real man

Blair: Please he works for his father (starts to get snotty) as auto mechanic he’s never gonnea get anywhere in life

Jo: (starts to raise her voice) oh and I suppose Chase is

Blair: yes he happens to be studying medicine

Jo: (looks down to the ground and then back up at Blair) I don’t blame him I’d study medicine too if I dated you

Tootie: (mrs. Garrett enters the room carrying her purse) Hi Mrs. Garrett are you going somewhere?

Mrs. Garrett: I’m going into town to get something for my son’s birthday (pauses for a few seconds with worry) I sure hope I find something

Natalie: (walks over to Mrs. Garrett and places her arm around her shoulder) Don’t worry Mrs. Garrett I’m sure what ever you pick out Alex will love it

Mrs. Garrett: (looks at Natalie and smiles) thanks Natalie I’ll see you girls later (she leaves the shop)

Jo: (takes a look at her watch) Well on that note I got a class I need to get too by guys (she leaves the shop)

Tootie: (looks both at Natalie and Blair) Well it looks like it’s just the three of us

Blair: I’m gonnea go into kitchen and check on the pastries

Tootie: (puts her arm around Nat) me and Nat will handle this crowd out here (Blair smiles at her and goes into the kitchen)

Natalie: (slowly Natalie looks around the shop and see’s that there’s no one there) tootie there’s nobody here

Tootie: (she says it with a smile) that’s the best kind of crowd to handle

Natalie: (Natalie looks at Tootie and smiles back then her attention is turned to the front door when this handsome guy walks in) and speaking of handling (tootie turns towards the front door too with her mouth wide open) look what just walked in

Natalie: (Natalie walks up to the guy just as Blair comes back in the room carryng a try of pastries) hi welcome to Edna Edibles (she says it without pausing) I’m available

Blair: (starts to laugh a little bit and walk towards him)Well he’s not

Chase: (he walks towards Blair smiling, he hold out his arms and hugs her) Blairzee

Natalie/tootie: (in a confused way)Blairzee

Chase: I just couldn’t stand being away from you one more second

Blair: (still smiling and acting all gitty) isn’t he sweet (stops for a moment with a cofused look on her face) how did you get over here so fast

Chase: I was calling from the payphone next door

Blair: (looks up at natlie and tootie) oh didn’t’ I tell you he was sweet

Natalie: (Natalie and Tootie walk towards Blair and her guy) yeah who is he

Blair: Oh I’m sorry Chase this is (She points to Natalie and Natalie waves her hand)Natalie and Tootie (she points to Tootie )

Tootie: (extends her hand and they shake) Hi it’s nice to meet you

Chase: (extends his hand and they shake) nice to meet you too

Natalie: (extends her hand so they can shake and Chase extends his smiling)nice to finally meet you

Tootie: Blair’s told us all about you (a female coustomer walks into the shop and starts to look around)

Natalie: (gives him a real dreamy look)but not everything

Female Coustomer: (she turns towards the girls and is getting a little annoyed)excuse me can I get some help over here

Tootie: (smiles and walks over to help her) Oh I’m sorry what can I get for you…..

Natalie: (she turns her attention back to Chase) so Blair tells us your studying medicine (tootie finshes with her coustomer and excorts her out of the shop)

Chase: I’m studying to become a vet (pauses for a few seconds) I just wish my brother would do something with his life

Natalie: he’s not going to college

Chase: he’s working as an auto mechanic but he his dating a college girl (looks at Natalie with a smile) I’m hoping she’ll be able to influence him

Natalie: (smiles back) who know’s maybe she will (another coustomer walks) oh excuse me (Natalie walks up to him)hi can I hope you with something

Blair: ( After the coustomer leaves Blair walks up to Natalie and chase) so what have you too been talking about (smiles)

Chase: (he turns to Blair holds out his arms and they embrace) about her lovely you are

Tootie: (walks up towards them) don’t worry Blair it was very short talk (Blair shoots her a look) hey Jo’s not here some body’s gotta pick up the slack

Chase: (gives Blair a kiss on the cheek) well I gotta get going I’ll see you this evening

Blair: not if I see you first (Chase smiles and starts to walk out of the shop blair follows him. Turns back towards Natalie and Tootie and smiles)

Tootie: hey Nat what movie should we see tonight

Natalie: (pauses for a few seconds) oh I don’t I’m in the mood for love story

Tootie: well let’s check the paper to see what’s playing

Natalie: (they both walk over towards the counter) Good idea (when the get there Natalie reaches under it and pulls out a paper they start reading the paper)

Down at the mall in the men’s clothing shop…..

Mrs. Garrett: (walks up to the salesman holding to shirts) excuse me which one of these shirts do you like

Salesman: (looks at both shirts) well I think there both great and any man would look great wearing them

Mrs. Garrett; (takes a look at both shirts) oh I just don’t know I’m picking out a gift for my son’s birthday but I do like the blue (she turns to the salesman with a smile) it will really bring out his eyes (suddenly her attention is turned the other way when she hears Jo walk in she turns towards Jo who’s walking with a guy who looks exactly like Chase he’s also carrying a package) Jo

Jo: (notices Mrs. Garrett and walks up to her) Hey Mrs. G have you picked out a gift for Alex yet

Mrs. Garrett: (holds up the ****s) I was thinking of giving him this blue shirt what do you think

Jo: (looks at the shirt and then starts to smile) I think you made a good choice there (her friend clears his throat and Jo looks back) Oh I’m sorry Mrs. Garrett you remember David

Oh I’m sorry mrs. Garrett this is David David this is mrs. Garrett

Mrs. Garrett: (smiling extends her hand and David extends his) hi it’s nice to finally meet you Jo’s told us so much about you

David: (smiles back) it’s nice to finally you Jo tells me that you own a gourment shop in town

Mrs. Garrett: not just a gourment shop the best (says it with a smile)

David: (laughs a tiny bit) well I’ll be sure to stop by there sometime

Mrs. Garrett: (takes one last look at the shirts) I think your right I’m going to go with the blue one thank you David

David: (smiles) anytime (he takes a look at his watch) Oh darn it (he looks up at Jo) I gotta get this package mailed before the post office closes

Mrs. Garrett: (laughing a little bit) but the post office doesn’t close for 2 hours

David: and you know how long the lines there can

Jo: (without pausing) he’s right Mrs. Garrett I’ll see you back at the shop (Jo and David head out the mall and Mrs. Garrett goes to pay for her shirt)

Later that day everyone is back at the shop waiting on coustomers…..
(there all walking around trying to help all the coustomer. One by one they start to leave until there’s just one left)

Blair: (smiling opens the front door) thank you come again (her smile quickly fades as the coustomer walks away) thank goodness that was the last coustomer of the day (she flips the sign to close and locks the door)

Jo: I agree with you there (sits down in a chair) I’m beat

Blair: (walks over to the table and sits down in a chair next to jo) I’m excusted

Jo: (stands up from the chair) I’m gonnea go take a nap before my date with David tonight

Blair: (gets up from her chair) that’s a good idea (she looks back at the others) would you mind locking up

Natalie: (smiles) no problem I guess being young does have it’s advantages

Tootie: (smiling she holds her hip and pretends to be in pain) right we don’t’ get sore

Mrs.Garrett: (starts to laugh just as the phone rings) I’ll get it (she walks over to pick up the phone) hello Edna’s Editables…..yeah she’s right here (holds out the phone towards Blair) blair’s its for you it’s chase

Tootie: I hope he doesn’t have to cancel

Blair: (looks back and Tootie and smile) don’t’ be ridiculous no man has ever canceled on me after all I am Blair Warner (walks up to the phone and smiles she takes the receiver from Natalie) Hi did you miss me as much as I missed you (Jo makes a disgusting face)….. (Blair’s tone suddenly changes and she starts to yell) WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE TO CANCEL…… (she lowers her voice) oh in that case I understand….. no we can make it another night….. ok by (she hangs up phone she turns back towards everyone else and there all looking at her) Ok Tootie was right he canceled

Mrs. Garrett: (walks up to Blair and puts her arm around her shoulder for support) well I’m sure what ever his reason was it was something important

Blair: one of the other medical students got sick, and he has to fill in at the animal hospital night on a delivery

Tootie: (with a really confused look) they deliver dog food now is it like pizza if you don’t get it in 30 minutes it’s free

Blair: (smiles at Tootie) No one of dogs is getting ready to have puppies and Chase is going to assist in the birth (pauses for a moment looks around) his first delivery I’m so proud (everyone else just laughs a little bit and smiles)

Jo: come on let’s finish cleaning the shop up (they all work to get the shop probelry closed up)

LATER THAT EVENING BLAIR IS READING A BOOK ON THE SOFA ALREADY CHANGED FOR BED……
(Jo is out with David and Natalie and Tootie are at the movies)

mrs. Garrett: (walks in with a bowl of popcorn) I always find that a popcorn and a good book go hand in hand

Blair: (looks up at her and smiles) I find the same thing to be true with popcorn and the movies (she takes some popcorn in her hand and eats it)

Mrs. Garrett: how about we go out to dinner tonight

Blair: oh Mrs. Garrett you don’t have to that I’ll be fine really

Mrs. Garrett: (smiles at her) I’m treating

Blair: just give me a minute to get changed (she quickly gets off the couch and Mrs. Garrett laughs a little bit)

MEANWHILE AT THE PIZZA PLACE ACROSS FROM THE THEARTHE’S NATALIE AND TOOTIE WALK IN….

Natalie: wasn’t that a great show (smiling)

Tootie: (smiling) yeah I always love the classicals

Natalie: me too (looks around and spots and empty table) oh there’s an empty table (they both walk over to the table and sit down)

Tootie: (looks around the place and spots Chase) hey there’s Chase

Natalie: (looks over and sees him looks back at Tootie with a confused look) I thought he had to work tonight

Tootie: so did I (getting angry) I can’t believe that creep cheating on Blair (she starts to get up from her chair) I’m gonnea go tell him off (just as she’s about to leave her table she notices that Jo sits down at the table right where Chase is sitting at) I don’t’ believe this

Natalie: (she turns back and spots Jo with Chase after a few seconds she turns back towards Tootie) What’s he doing going out with Jo

Waiter: (approaches there table) good evening ladies may I take your order now

Tootie: (still focusing on Jo and Chase) What (she looks over at the waiter) oh yeah (she looks down at the menu) just give us the number 6 and I’ll have a coke

Waiter: are you sure miss?

Tootie: (snaps at the waiter) yes I’m sure

Waiter: alright (he turns towards Natalie) and what would you like to drink

Natalie: I’ll have a root beer

Waiter: (the waiter leaves to go put in there orders)

Tootie: (shakes her head in disbelief) I don’t know I never thought I would see the day (Natalie turns her attention back towards Jo and Chase) when Jo would stap her best friend in the back

Natalie: (turns back towards tootie with confusion on her face) who’s her best friend (tootie just gives her a look Natalie thinks for a minute and she gets it ) Oh I get it yeah I know what you mean what do you think we should do about this

Tootie: (pauses while thinking about it) I think we tell Blair about this

Natalie: Tootie she’d never believe us like any of Blair’s boyfriends would dump her to go out with Jo

Tootie: yeah your right how about if we write a letter

(on the other side of the resturaunt Jo and Chase stand up and get ready to leave)

Tootie: Oh my gosh there leaving what if they see us

Natalie: (turns towards them for a second and then back towards tootie) what are we gonnea do

Tootie: quick under the table (Tootie jumps out of her chair and goes the table)

(Jo and Chase are putting on there jackets and looking over the bill)

Natalie: (with a disgusted look on her face) under the table are you crazy this floor’s dirty

Tootie: (peaks her head out and yells) Natalie

Natalie: (without even thinking she gets under the table with Tootie. The table is rather small so they really have to squeeze together. In a whisper) you know best friends should be close but this ridiculous

Jo: (jo and Chase walk past there table pay there check and leave)

Waiter: (approaches the table) did you girls lose something

Tootie: (gets up from under the table same with Natalie and they sit back down on there chairs looks up at the waiter and trys to act cool) I don’t know what your talking about

Waiter: (shakes his head in confusion) well are you drinks (he hands each of the girls there drinks) and heres your pizza

Natalie / tootie: (both look down at the pizza and back up at the waiter with totally disgusting faces)

Natalie: (points to the pizza) what is this?

Waiter: it’s just what your friend order the garlic, mushroom, peanut butter and jelly anchoive pizza

Tootie: well were not going to eat this can you please just bring us a pepperoni pizza

Natalie: (has a piece of pizza in her hand and is eating) wait a minute Tootie this isn’t half bad (she looks up at the waiter) is that grape jelly they used

Waiter: yes I believe so

Natalie: (takes another bit of the pizza and tootie makes a gross face at her) you know next time excuse me (has to clear her mouth from the peanut butter) next time I try using raspberry I think it could really bring out the flavor of the pizza

Waiter: (smiles at Natalie) I’ll tell the cooks to keep that in mind (he turns towards Tootie) I’ll go put in your order

Natalie: (takes one more bit and then puts down her slice of pizza) now what were you saying about writing a letter

Tootie: (takes a sip of her soda) oh yeah we could write a letter for Blair and give it Chase (thinks for a moment) something like dear rat face scum bucket

Natalie: (raises her voice) Tootie

Tootie: ok will clean it up a bit

Natalie: no way after what he did to Blair that rat face scum bucket deserves to be told off

Tootie: (smiles back at Natalie)

Back at the house Mrs. Garrett and Blair return home

Blair: (walks in the house with Mrs. Garrett behind her she looks back at Mrs. Garrett) thanks again for dinner it was great (she goes over to hang up her coat)

Mrs. Garrett: (smiling at Blair) my pleasure how about some hot coco

Blair: (rubs her hands together) anything to help warm me up

Jo: (comes downstairs) hi guys where have you been? (takes a seat down on the couch and Mrs. Garrett goes into the kitchen)

Blair: (sits down on the couch next to Jo) we just back from dinner how was your date with David

Jo: (smiling) wonderful

Blair: (smiles back at Jo) yeah Chase has that same magic on me

(Natalie and Tootie walk in the house)

Jo: (she looks up at them) hi guys how was the movies

Natalie: (hangs up her coat) the movie was good, but not as good as the pizza

Jo: I didn’t see you at pizza place did you go to the one across the street from the movies

Tootie: (yells) WELL I’M NOT SURPRISED (tootie heads up stairs and Natalie goes with her)

Blair: (turns her attention towards Jo) what was that all about

Jo: I have no idea

Mrs. Garrett: (walks in carrying a tray with 5 cups of hot coco) Hi Jo I thought I heard Natalie and tootie out here

Blair: they just went upstairs in a total huff

Mrs. Garrett: really I wonder what’s wrong (she places the tray down on the coffee table Jo and Blair each take a cup)

Up in the girls room Natalie and Tootie are sitting on there beds. Tootie has a piece of paper and a pen)

Tootie: ok (reads over the letter) the letter’s finished (she seals it up in an envelope) I can’t wait for Chase to get it

Natalie: yeah well let’s hide it until tomorrow

Tootie: (places the letter under her pillow) right if Jo or Blair find it were dead

The next morning…….

(Mrs. Garrett Blair and Jo are eating breakfast Natalie and Tootie come downstairs)

Mrs. Garrett: morning girls I made French toast

Tootie: (looks over at Jo with a totally discusted face) no thank you Mrs. Garrett we refuse to eat in the company of some people (she looks over at Natalie) right Natalie

Natalie: (she walks towards the others) Did you say French toast

Tootie: Natalie

Natalie: (sits down at the table) hey I’m not gonnea miss Mrs. Garrets French toast

Tootie: I’ll see you later I gotta go mail a letter (she graps her coat and quickly leaves)

Mrs. Garrett: (looks up at the girls with confusion) what is going on with her

Jo: that’s what I’d to know she snapped last night too

Mrs. Garrett: (smiles and looks at Jo) oh and speaking of that how was your date with David

Natalie: (takes a bit of a toast and mumbles) yeah right David

Jo: (looks at her with confusion) it was good were going out again this evening for a picnic dinner (she turns towards Blair) hey maybe you and Chase could join us

Blair: (drinks some orange juice) sounds like a great idea I’ll give him a call this morning

Natalie: (shakes her head in disbelief and contines eating her breakfast)

Mrs. Garrett: (looks up at her watch) well we better open up the store (jo and Blair get up from the table and grap there dishes. Mrs. Garrett graps her too they all walk into the kitchen)

Natalie: (continues to eat Tootie walks back in the house) did you put the letter in the mail box

Tootie: (she walks over to the table and takes a seat) no I just walked over to his house and put it in the mail box he’s not worth the cost of stamp (she places some French toast on her plate and begins to eat)

LATER THAT DAY IN THE SHOP…..

Blair: (Chase walks in and Natalie and Tootie look at each other) Chase hi (she walks up to him and gives him a hug)

Chase: (backs away from Blair and is angry) Blair if you wanted to break up with me that’s fine (pauses for a slight moment) but I thought you would at least have the guts to tell me to my face instead of writing this letter (he shows Blair the letter Blair graps it, and Chase storms out)

Mrs. Garrett: Blair what was that all about (she walks up towards Blair)

Blair: (looks at Mrs. Garrett in disbelief) I have no idea I never wrote any letter (she begins reading the letter) this isn’t even my hand writing it looks like (she reads some more and then looks right up at tootie) Tootie (in a mad huff she walks up towards her) how could you do this to me I want an explanation and I want it now

Natalie: (walks up to Blair Jo also starts walking up) Blair we were only trying to spare your feelings

Blair: (looks over at natalie) you mean you were in on this too

Mrs. Garrett: Tootie Natalie I want you to go over to Chase’s house right now and tell him who really wrote that letter

David: (walks into the shop) hi everyone is something wrong (they all turn towards him)

Jo: (walks up towards David Natalie and Tootie look at each other with total confusion) Hi (she gives him a hug)

David: (they stop hugging and he walks up towards Blair) Blair I heard about you and Chase breaking up

Jo: (looks both at Natalie and Tootie and then back up at David) she didn’t break up with Chase, Natalie and tootie did it for her

David: (looks both at Natalie and tootie and then back up at Blair) I know (looks back over at Tootie) she delieved a letter to the house this morning

Mrs. Garrett: and she was just about to go over to your house and explain everything to your brother

Natalie / Tootie (yelling) his brother

Jo: yeah David and Chase are brothers (pauses for a moment) twins

Natalie: twins Oh no

Tootie: Oh my gosh (pauses for a moment) we are so sorry last night at the pizza place we saw Jo there

Natalie: (contines with the story) and we thought she was there Chase

Tootie: we didn’t know they were twins

Blair: (smiles and looks over at Jo who forms a smile on her face) that’s ok I guess it’s kind of our fault too for not telling you

Natalie: come on Tootie let’s go over to Chase’s house and explain it all

Tootie: (looks up at Natalie and Tootie) is there anything we can do to make it up to you

Jo: (smiles and looks at Natalie and Tootie) oh don’t worry will think of something

(Natalie and Tootie look at each other with worry on there faces)

LATER THAT EVENING…..

Blair: (sitting at the table next to Chase Jo and David are across from them) it’s to bad we got rained out

Chase: (smiles while looking at Blair) I’m just glad were back together again

Blair: Me too (she picks up a little bell and rings it)

Natalie: (walks into the room wearing a maids uniform) carrying a pitcher of water (in a real snotty voice with a fake English accicent) here’s your water mum (she pours water into Blair’s glass)

Jo: (looks up at her with a fake smile) thank you very much now how about turning on the stero for us

Blair: the stero’s broken remember

Jo: (see’s Tootie also wearing a maid’s uniform walk in the room and a huge smile comes on her face) no problem (she turns back towards Natalie and Tootie) we’d like to hear something by Springsteen

Tootie: (gives her real condasending look) and just how would you like to hear that the stero’s broken

Blair: (smiles and looks up at Natalie and tootie) true (pauses for a moment) but your voices aren’t

Natalie / tootie: (both give them looks and then look at each other after about a seond they start singing) tell her about it tell everything you feel give her every….

Jo: (cuts them off and raises her voice) I said something by Springsteen

Natalie / tootie: (quickly change to a Springsteen song)everybody’s got a hungry heart, everybody’s got a hungry heart lay down your money….. (they continue to sing while Jo Blair Chase and David go on with there dinner)
