Default For all you Penny fans the numbers don't lie, the character KILLED the show

After being added to the show, Good Times went from being ranked in the 20's all the way to #54. If they hadjust keep the remaining characters and not added a child the show woukd have still had some hope. The numbers show that a CHILD was not needed

I disagree, the show dipped in the ratings due to Esther Rolle's departure. She was missed and the show never recovered after her return in the 6th season, by then the show was tired and Esther's return couldn't help.

I have to agree with you.
I do admit the character of Penny was liked by me when she first came on, but later on, it was pointless.
Solomon, at this point in the season, what night was GT's on and what shows was it up against?

But the addition of Penny was not the answer and made the show more unwatchable, the numbers don't lie

The first half of the 1977-78 season, GT aired on Wednesdays at 8pm up against Eight is Enough.

The second half of the 77-78 season it was moved to mondays at 8pm up against Little House on The Prarie

I personally think the ratings dropped due to Esther Rolle's departure, but then again, I wasn't born yet when the show was on the first time. I could be wrong.

It wasn't Penny, it lack of Rolle that did it. Whether Penny was there or not was not a big issue. The fact that the star was not there is what did the show in. Wilona trying to carry the show did not work. Even the J.J.isms were not enough to rely on.

Little House WAS DA BOMB!!!! It was a hot show. Add the fact Esther Rolle was gone and put GT's up against a hands-down winner like LHOTP and you have a recipe for disaster.

Thank You Ms.Irene! That season four of Little House has sooo much happening. The Garveys, Mary's engagment breakup, one man's attraction for Caroline, Nellie's Marriage, Mary B-tch Slap across Nellie's face and Mary's blindness along with the breakup of the town. This was good stuff.

Dude! I didn't know you were a LHOTP fan? You should go check out the LHOTP forum and add some "bump" to that place.

LHOTP is awesome. It is among my fave shows of all time.

I loved Good Times with James and Florida. I miss the tanned pant's man with the sweet cheeks, lol, but I still liked the show when he left. When Florida left, I hated the show. Kid, no kid, dog, bird, even JJ, nothing mattered at this point. Florida's departure was the final death blow to the show. The kid certainly didn't help matters though.

I think it's sad what happened to Good Times. It was a real good show, just ruined by egos, creative differences, etc. It's really too bad they couldn't have worked their issues out. The viewers lost out.

I agree...I use to watch Little House all the time.
As for the first half of that season going up against Eight Is Enough, no contest EIE was hot back then and it's what I watched on Wednesdays. It was Esther's departure that doomed the show, that's what the numbers proved more so than the addition of Penny. I do agree that the Penny character did get annoying at times, but I loved her debut it was a great storyline.
