Default Working an extra shift

Do you mind working an extra shift, if your boss asks?

I'd prefer to just put in my 8 hours, but sometimes I have to work an extra hour or two. I don't really want to work two 8 hour shifts in a row.

At my old job, I got called in early. I think I ended up working 8-5:30 instead of 12:30-5:30, just sitting at a reception desk. Horrible. But they did let me have a lunch where I normally wouldn't have gotten one.

At my current job, I cover people all the time, but it's usually at the same time as I normally work. I just stay for an extra hour.

I have had to do that a few times. I hated when you tried to get a favor for that person that you would work for and then they would forget that you covered for them or was unable to work for you. I had stopped volunteering for others. This of course was when I was sorting mail at the off campus apt. that I was living at.

I'm not sure if this is related to the topic(I never had a 9 to 5 job) but when I used to be in a band, we had a gig at some club and we were first up, nobody told us that the band after us canceled(after I made plans after the show by the way.) and we had to cover for them just so we can save the club's ass. Good lord, we didn't have enough songs to last four hours!

If this was directed at me I do agree that some notice would have been nice and trust me, it was a thorn in my ass considering that we didn't have enough songs. But, here's the trick with most clubs hiring bands, they don't care how long you are up there, they refuse to pay extra to bands covering another band most of the time. I was not in a good mood and plus I had school the next day(I was a high school senior around this time.) but they didn't get a damn....

This is part of the reason why I quit singing in bands.

My husband is a manager where he works. Unfortunately being salaried, he doesn't get overtime pay and is often asked to cover other managers shifts. He signed a contract with the store to work 50-60 hours a week. During the Christmas holidays I hardly ever see him.

It just goes with the territory. I just left my job and was a manger also. Fortunately I only worked Monday-Friday, but often put in 70-80 hours a week. Just because the workload was so big that it required extra work.

That always makes me so mad! Just as I said "Thank you and goodnight", the club manager jumped on stage and told me "Keep playing, the band after you canceled." I told him, "You forgot that I have school tommorow." He said, "And? I'm paying you to sing."
